The C8 Corvette ZR1 can get 850 horsepower from a Twin-Turbo v8.

The Chevrolet Corvette has been the subject of some good news in recent months, such as the announcement of the electric Corvette and Z06. However, a new report shows that Chevrolet may be working on a C8 Corvette ZR1 with an 850-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

Chevy has a lot of plans for the Corvette C8, so many that it's easy to lose sight of everything. There's another one that's been recently unveiled, an all-electric model in the works, as well as an all-wheel-drive hybrid model. According to a recent report, there will be another even more extreme track-ready model: the upcoming ZR1, which will reportedly get 850 horsepower from its Turbo V8 twin.

Two turbochargers available

This alleged Corvette ZR1 is said to use the same 8-liter flat-crank V5.5 as the new Corvette Z06, Chevy's new high-tech engine. In the Z06, the new V8 is naturally aspirated and makes 670 horsepower, but this report claims the ZR1 will have two turbochargers to achieve the aforementioned 850 horsepower. That report also claims that the 850 horses will run through Chevy Tremec's eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the same one used in the current C8 Corvette Stingray, and drive only its rear wheels. If true, the claimed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires would be required.

The most extreme Corvette

If any of this is true, the Corvette ZR1 will be the most extreme track-focused Corvette and the most powerful rear-wheel drive Corvette ready to challenge any extreme 911 GT3 RS that Porsche is working on. What's even crazier is that it might not even be the most powerful next-generation Corvette C8.

The arrival of the electric Corvette

As GM president Mark Reuss recently said, there will be both one and a hybrid Corvette that could debut as early as next year. Since the Vette hybrid has been confirmed, if it used the same 8-liter V5.5 with at least an electric motor and all-wheel drive, it's likely that it could make 1,000 horsepower or more. Even the non-turbo Z06 puts out nearly 700 horsepower, so the electric motors can easily make up the difference to pump out four-figure horsepower.

Chevrolet hasn't confirmed the ZR1

Of course, this is just speculation at this point, as Chevy hasn't confirmed the ZR1 with that horsepower, nor the horsepower of any other future Corvettes. However, if the rumors are true, it's interesting to think about the future of the Corvette.
