History of Castrol

Early years

The founder of Castrol was Charles “Cheers” Wakefieldwhich gave it the name CC Wakefield and Company. In 1899, Charles Wakefield decided to leave his job at Vacuum Oli to open a shop on Cheapside Street in London selling lubricants for rail vehicles and heavy equipment. He was persuaded to join his business and hired eight colleagues from his previous job. Since it was in the early XNUMX century, the concepts of sports cars and airplanes were all the rage, Wakefield began to delve into them.

Initially, the company began producing oils for new engines that had to meet the following requirements: they should not be too thick to work in the cold, and not too thin to withstand high temperatures. Laboratory studies have shown that a mixture of ricin (a vegetable oil from castor bean seeds) works great.

This new product has been released under the name CASTROL.

The world belongs to the brave

development innovative engine oil mobilized creators to find the right ways to reach the consumer. Sponsorship here turned out to be a bull's-eye - the Castrol name began to appear on banners and flags during aviation competitions, car races and attempts to break speed records. The creators have expanded their offering with an increasingly profitable line of products targeted at specific car manufacturers. Since 1960, the name of the oil turned out to be more popular than the name of the creator, so the name of the company was changed to Castrol Ltd. In the sixties, studies were also carried out on the physicochemical properties of oils. A modern research center of the company was opened in England.

In 1966, further changes took place - Castrol became the property of the Burmah Oil Company.

Ups and successes

Castrol - motor oils and lubricantsCastrol gradually became a very recognizable brand. The current success of the company is, above all, the result of continuous learning from the assumptions of the past.
