2023 Land Rover Defender price and specs: two powertrains removed and price updated for protected all-wheel drive.

The Defender 110 D250 shown here will remain on sale until April 2022, when it will be dropped from the lineup.

Land Rover is dropping two engine options and raising prices as part of next year's launch of the 2023 Defender lineup.

For the five-door 110 range, Land Rover has ditched the entry-level D250 drivetrain, leaving only one diesel offering, the D300, and three petrol offerings, including the P300 and P400, as well as the fire-breathing V8-powered P525.

The D250 is a 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel with 183kW and 570Nm mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It will remain in the lineup until the model year change in April 2022.

The short-wheelbase Defender 90 three-door range has also been changed, with the entry-level D200 diesel engine removed from the list. This engine is a modified version of the D250 with 147kW/500Nm.

This means that the new entry-level powertrain for the Defender 90 and 110 is a 300-litre P2.0 turbocharged petrol engine with 221kW/400Nm.

However, the D250 only lives in the Defender 90 in one class, and it's the only diesel option for short wheelbase variants.

Pricing increased for all variants, with the 110's starting price increasing by just under $3000 to $79,830 before travel costs for the Defender P300.

The starting price of the Defender 90 is up just under $4000 to $78,480 for P300.

Most of the price increases are around $3000 to $4500, but the biggest jump is for the flagship P525 V8, which rose $4764 to $210,716 for $90 and $4854 to $220,530 for $110.

This new price is about $15,000 more than Land Rover's announced $525 price since its launch earlier this year.

Despite the price increase, the performance-focused Defender P525 is still underperforming its V8-powered Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S competitor, which starts at $243,300. But now it's more expensive than the BMW X5 M Competition, which starts at $212,900.

The P525 is powered by a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine with 386kW and 625Nm and was added to the lineup earlier this year. Land Rover raised the price of a number of options by adding the P525 back in February of this year.

As part of the 2023 model year update, all Defenders now come standard with wireless charging, an 11.4-inch multimedia touchscreen and an activity key bracelet that can lock and unlock the car.

Other changes include a contrast roof as standard on X-Dynamic trims, black (from blue) brake calipers on the V8 P525, some new materials, and other new options.

Land Rover Defender sales are up a whopping 444% this year, with 1590 vehicles sold by the end of October. In the premium large SUV segment, it is second only to the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5 and Lexus RX.

The Defender is currently the best-selling Land Rover model in the local market, and its sales success also contributed to Land Rover's overall sales growth of 20 percent year on year.
