2022 Range Rover price and specs: Australian launch of new BMW X7 and rival Mercedes-Benz GLS blocked

The cheapest petrol Range Rover jumped almost $20,000 to $225,500 before road expenses.

Land Rover has officially unveiled its next-generation Range Rover, which leaked online last week, confirming price and specifications for Australia, and also showing a seven-seat version for the first time.

The all-new fifth-generation model is available for order starting tomorrow, with deliveries expected in June 2022 to compete with other big luxury SUVs like the Audi Q8, BMW X7, Bentley Bentayga and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

However, orders for the new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and top-end SV versions will open at the end of January, with deliveries starting in the second half of next year.

Opens the 2022 Range Rover lineup with the 300 model year D220,200 SE, priced at $19,324 pre-travel — a significant price jump of $9.6, or XNUMX%, from last year's entry level.

The SE trim is also available with the P400 engine for $225,500, up $19,331 from the previous $400 Vogue model.

Those after the higher HSE trim level will also have to opt for the more powerful D350 and P530 engines, priced at $241,400 and $259,500 respectively, while Autobiography versions with the same powertrains are available for $279,600 and $297,600 dollars each.

A five-seat, long-wheelbase version of the Autobiography is also available, which adds $5500 to the asking price, while the seven-seat options are $286,600 (D350) and $304,700 (P530).

Based on the Autobiography with a short wheelbase and additional options, and only available in the first 12 months of production, the D350 and P530 First Edition variants are positioned at $298,800 and $312,500 — $19,200 and $14,900 more than the donor cars.

As before, the D300 is powered by a 3.0kW/221Nm 650-liter inline-six turbodiesel engine, while the P400 uses a 3.0kW/294Nm 550-liter inline-six turbodiesel engine.

However, the D350 engine is the same size as its D300 sibling but tuned for 258kW/700Nm.

The P530 is a new engine in the Range Rover lineup that is rumored to come from BMW's M division and is a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol that develops 390kW/750Nm.

All engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends drive to all four wheels, while the D300, D350 and P400 variants feature 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

The main feature of the exterior changes is a sleeker look with flush door handles (like on the Velar), slimmer headlights and a rear end with vertical taillights that connect behind the Range Rover badging.

The glass is also almost flush with the bodywork, giving the new Range Rover the feel of being machined from a single piece of metal, according to the brand.

Inside the 2022 Range Rover, you can see a new two-spoke steering wheel with touch controls and redesigned climate control, as well as a shifter instead of the previous model's rotary knob.

A digital instrument cluster, redesigned seats, synthetic leather trim and open pore wood trim are also available across the entire new Range Rover range.

Responsible for multimedia functions is the new 13.1-inch Pivi Pro touch screen with minimal bezels. Satellite navigation, over-the-air updates, digital radio and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto wireless are offered, and the screen also supports pinch, swipe and zoom gestures, as well as haptic feedback to make it more like a smartphone.

As an option, you can install a rear seat entertainment system that includes two 11.4-inch floating screens with built-in soundbars, as well as a fold-down armrest with seat adjustment buttons, climate control and more.

As before, an executive two-seater version of the second row is available.

With seven seats available exclusively for the LWB Range Rover, third-row space is 600mm wide and the seats feature power folding, heating, air vents and USB-C charging ports.

Land Rover claims 864mm of legroom in the sixth and seventh seats and says they will comfortably accommodate a six-foot tall passenger.

Built on the new Jaguar Land Rover MLA-Flex architecture, the new generation of Range Rover has also been designed with electrification in mind, with a plug-in and all-electric version in development.

The first, known as the P510e, will be launched in the second half of 2022 and features a larger 38.2kW underfloor battery paired with a 105kW electric motor and a six-cylinder petrol engine delivering around 80km of emission-free driving range.

At the same time, the current top-of-the-line SV, which Land Rover describes as "a refined interpretation of Range Rover luxury and personality," will be launched.

However, in 2024 it will be a few more years before the all-electric Range Rover arrives.
