The Range Rover SV is available in Australia in standard and long wheelbase versions.

The Range Rover has outperformed its competitors in the luxury SUV segment by becoming the first large SUV to be offered in Australia with a plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV).

Since all of its competitors are available with petrol or diesel engines, the Range Rover P440e will carve out a niche of its own when deliveries begin in the second half of the year.

There are two new plug-in hybrid variants combining a six-cylinder petrol engine with a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor - the 324kW/620Nm P440e and the more powerful 375kW/700Nm P510e.

Starting at $229,200 before tolls, the P440e SE is the third most affordable Range Rover option in Australia, ahead of the D300 SE ($220,200) and the P400e SE ($225,500).

The P510e is available in HSE and Autobiography editions starting at $262,400 and $292,900 respectively.

Range Rover says it has squeezed more electric range out of the drivetrain than originally thought. The brand aimed for up to 100km on the WLTP cycle, but PHEV models offer a range of 113km, which equates to a "real" range of 88km.

The company says this is enough to allow Range Rover owners to make 75% of their trips in pure electric mode.

None of its competitors - such as the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, Lexus LX, Audi Q8, Aston Martin DBX and Bentley Bentayga - have a PHEV drivetrain, so the closest competitor will be the Porsche Cayenne PHEV models, which have a range of 47km.

Range Rover has also promised an all-electric version in 2023.

Range Rover has also confirmed three versions of the flagship SV for Australia. Two standard wheelbase versions are available, including the D3.0 258-litre 350kW turbodiesel engine priced from $341,300. For buyers who want to tinker a bit, there's also BMW's 390kW 4.4-liter V8 in the P530 starting at $347,900.

The long-wheelbase version of the P530 adds an impressive $43,900 to the price of the standard SV V8, ensuring it tops the entire $391,800 Range Rover lineup.

Personalization is the name of the game with the SV, and Range Rover says it can be customized in over 1.6 million combinations.

The SV stands out from the rest of the lineup with its unique front bumper and grille design, different round grilles on the side gills and tailgate, and optional 23-inch wheels.

A two-tone interior is available, and Range Rover has created two separate design themes - the luxury-focused SV Serenity and the "inconspicuous" SV Intrepid - to personalize the SV.

The long-wheelbase SV is available with a four-seat "Signature Suite" that includes a console that runs the length of the cabin and accommodates a power table, electrically folding cup holders, and a built-in fridge with SV-engraved Dartington crystal glassware.

It is also available with 13.1-inch rear entertainment screens, the largest ever fitted to a Range Rover.
