Are Tesla prices in Europe net prices for Poland? "Rich Poles" will pay 23 percent more than the Germans? [reader question]

Since Tesla introduced new price lists, concerned readers have written to us that Poles will pay significantly more for a car than Germans or Dutch. The configurator shows that the gross price for the countries where Tesla is sold is the net price for the non-core countries, i.e. the rest of Europe. Let's see what exactly is going on.

Mr. Marchin writes:

This worried me. I noticed that the Dutch price for the Tesla X (€ 95) includes VAT. However, when switching to Other Europe, the amount does not change much (820 euros), but underneath it is signed that VAT is not included. The difference does not cover withholding VAT, because the price should be reduced by several thousand euros. Does this mean that when I buy a Tesla in Poland, I will pay more for the same car?

Poland as a non-core country

In our opinion, this is a mistake on the site, because the countries of the “Other Europe” are treated with negligence. At worst: a deterrent. In the part devoted to orders from countries such as Poland, the manufacturer sets tough conditions, because, what to hide, we are a country outside the circle of interests (non-core)... So we need to independently transport the car from Tilburg (Netherlands) within a week from the moment of its readiness.

However, in the whole price comparison, another passage is the most important. In the original, it sounds like this:

Sales to other EU countries will be subject to a 0% VAT rate in the Netherlands, provided that the buyer provides Tesla within 30 days of delivery with the relevant documents in support of the application of the 0% VAT rate in the Netherlands.

What's going on here? This is a rather difficult situation as it concerns the situation with the acquisition of goods within the Community. In a nutshell: if you run a business and are an active VAT and VAT payer in the EU, you buy a car for Net price in the Netherlandsand you pay VAT in Poland. These are the documents that Tesla mentions.

On the other hand, an individual, an ordinary person, can theoretically go to a car dealership and then buy a car. Gross price in the Netherlands - and she should not be interested in net amounts and VAT at all. After all, we don't count beer or chocolate bought in a German shop at the Polish tax office!

Unfortunately, the problem is that Tesla does not have showrooms and does not want to sell cars in non-core countries. Therefore, Poles interested in buying cars from a Californian manufacturer most often use one of two methods:

  • opening a foreign branch that buys a car “for himself” (only for companies),
  • through an intermediary service (companies and individuals).

In both cases, the buyer of the car lives in the country where the purchases are made and therefore pays for the car at local rates. Therefore, he is not interested in the amounts for "Other Europe", because he has a Dutch / German / Belgian / ... address.

For the same reason, all www.elektrowoz.pl editors translate prices into Polish using Dutch courses. We advise people interested in buying a car to use one of the above methods or to wait a few more weeks (maximum months) until the service is launched in Poland. Then our country should move from a “non-core” group to a “profile” one..
