How to insulate the ignition coil?

Often the reason that the car does not start is problems with its ignition system. To identify the problem, you need to run diagnostics. Sometimes it is not easy to do this, because, firstly, the number of diagnosed nodes is large. Secondly, for this you need to use additional equipment - an internal combustion engine tester, an ohmmeter, a scanner to detect errors on machines equipped with an ECU.

A common cause of problems in the system is the ignition coil, namely the breakdown of the short circuit. Under the term breakdown of the ignition coil or a candle tip is understood as a breakdown in the weakest point of the body or wire insulation due to a decrease in resistance that occurs in short periods of time. This is a mechanical defect that leads to the appearance of cracks or melting. On the surface of the housing, the breakdown site looks like black, burnt dots, longitudinal tracks or white cracks. Such places of flashing sparks are especially dangerous in wet weather. This malfunction leads not only to a violation of the ignition of the mixture, but also to the complete failure of the ignition module.

As for the question of how to fix the breakdown that has occurred and how to isolate the ignition coil, then there are two options - fast (“field”) and slow (“garage”). In the latter case, it is worth completely changing the coil, especially if the breakdown is significant. As for quick repairs, they use insulating materials.

How to glue the ignition coil?

If the spark breakdown on the housing is small (and this is the most common type of breakdown), then after localizing this place, you need to use insulating materials (, , , or similar means) to isolate the place (path) of the breakdown. In some cases, they even use nail polish, but the polish should only be colorless, without any paints or additives. It is impossible to give universal advice; it all depends on the specific situation.

How to use heat shrink tubing?

To seal the ignition coil, we take a heat shrink of a suitable (large) diameter, which we put on the ignition coil with the help of a pasatizh, and then heat it with an electric dryer, thereby creating a strong insulating layer. The procedure is simple, the main thing is to choose a heat shrink of a suitable size and diameter, and also have a hair dryer on hand (there is a building one) or some kind of gas burner.

When performing repairs, be sure to clean and degrease the place of electrical breakdown before applying a protective insulating layer on it. This will increase the resistance value of the resulting insulation. If liquid appears in the coil due to damage to the insulation and breakdown (usually from a damaged seal), then it makes sense additionally use dielectric grease.

How to insulate the ignition coil?

Wash the internal combustion engine only if you are sure of the quality of the seals on the candle wells so that water does not get inside them. Otherwise, cunning dealers may deceive you and recommend that you replace the ignition assembly.

If insulating the ignition coil didn't fix the problem?

Well, in the most difficult case, you can, of course, install a new coil. It can be original or not original - depends on the price. Many car owners are saved by the so-called "dismantling", that is, places where you can buy spare parts from dismantled cars. There they are cheaper and it is quite possible to find high-quality components.

Also, for prevention, it is worth keeping the coil body, and other elements of the internal combustion engine, clean, so that there is no “flashing” of sparks due to dirt and dust.
