Some drivers elevate the active parking assistance system (when the car itself finds a place and tells the steering wheel which pedals to press) to the rank of the greatest inventions of mankind and cannot imagine their car life without this, at first glance, useful option. A couple of decades ago, drivers for the most part did not even dream of rear-view cameras, to say nothing of systems such as a parking assistant. Today, this option is offered not only to wealthy motorists who have their eyes on the brand new Mercedes S-Class or the Bavarian Seven, but also to mere mortals who are asking the price of a rich Ford Focus.

Of particular joy is the active parking assistance system for motorists who have difficulty “embedding” their large cars in narrow spaces in the parking lot even after ten years from the moment they received their “rights”, as well as for beginners who do not notice anything at first, except for the rear bumper of the one in front auto. How cool - I activated the system, but follow the instructions of the machine displayed on the multimedia monitor! But not everything is so simple.

The first and most obvious disadvantage of this system is that you will never master the art of parking, because it requires the driver to work independently. “Well, I’ll ride with the system for a bit, learn, and then stop using it,” many beginners think. And this is a deep delusion: how can one learn without practice? What are you going to do if the system crashes? Leave your car in the middle of the road? Call a friend for help?

Secondly, an automatic parking attendant is only an assistant who may need human intervention at any time. Even with the option enabled, the driver must ensure that there are no obstacles around the car, and that the speed does not exceed a certain mark - usually 10 km / h. And, by the way, if the system messes up by inadvertently hooking a neighboring car, then the helmsman will also have to answer, not the manufacturer.

Why Active Parking Assist is Dangerous

The active parking assistance system is far from ideal: in order for it to work correctly, a number of conditions must be met. The electronic assistant can fail if one tire is worn more than the rest, if the wheels do not meet the dimensions recommended by the manufacturer, when slipping, when coasting, in heavy rain or snow, when parking near low curbs ... And the list goes on.

So is it worth overpaying at least 15 rubles (if you take, for example, the same top-end Ford Focus) for an active parking assistance system when it makes little sense? Even the most novice driver can easily cope with the task, provided that there are parking sensors or, in extreme cases, a conventional rear view camera. And if the driver can't do it, then maybe he shouldn't drive at all?
