Let's briefly consider the main factors that destroy the exhaust system.
- Heat. At the base of the exhaust manifold, the metal temperature of the line often exceeds 400 ° C. This accelerates corrosion processes and weakens the metal.
- Vibration. Dynamic alternating loads lead to the accumulation of microdamages in the metal structure, which subsequently develop into cracks.
- Impact of external and internal aggressive environments. Outside, the exhaust line is adversely affected by water, abrasives and chemicals that are sprinkled on roads in winter. From the inside, the muffler metal is destroyed by the active compounds contained in the exhaust. This factor is considered the most destructive.
Special paints are used to protect the silencer from corrosive processes.
Painting options
The main task of paint for the exhaust system is to withstand high temperatures. Therefore, the only suitable option for painting the muffler is heat-resistant paints. In practice, two main paint options for exhaust lines are most often used.
- Silicone heat-resistant paints. They are in demand among amateurs, as they do not require specific conditions or special skills from the car owner to apply. Sold in both standard cans and aerosol cans. Good resistance to high temperatures. However, it has been noticed that the exhaust manifold painted with such paint will quickly peel off. And on elements far from the engine and colder, such as a resonator, a catalyst or the muffler itself, silicone paint adheres well.
- Powder heat-resistant paints. Typically used in industrial environments. Able to withstand higher temperatures than silicone options. However, they are more complex in terms of application.
It is recommended to paint only new elements of the exhaust system. Surface painting an already used muffler, with signs of corrosion and especially without prior preparation, will not give a long-term result.
