How to lubricate hair? Walkthrough

What are the methods of lubrication? How to wash oil from hair? We offer a simple master class. We advise on how to choose an oil and method, and debunk the most common myths.

Applying oil to hair is an increasingly popular practice promoted by maniacs as a natural way to restore healthy look and protect hair. How to perform an oiling ritual?

Each hair, regardless of the degree of porosity, needs emollients, i.e. lubricants. Emollients vary in their action. Some synthetics, such as paraffin, remain on the surface, providing a protective filter without moisturizing or softening the skin or hair. Natural oils guarantee a combination of these positive effects - they protect, and at the same time moisturize and nourish.

Emollients are essential for your hair in daily care, especially if it is very porous. From time to time it is also worth lubricating them with oil, which nourishes them and provides a protective coating, as well as facilitates detangling and ensures smoothness. If you have curls or waves, oiling your hair regularly will also help make your curls thicker.

How to oil your hair for the best results? Follow the instructions below and everything will go smoothly! Here is a step by step guide.

  • Step One: Adjust the oil according to the porosity of your hair.

  • Step two: choose a method of oiling the hair (dry oiling, oiling with foundation oil, oiling wet hair in the so-called broth, mist oiling) and apply oil.

  • Step Three: Rinse the oil out of your hair.

We will discuss each of the steps in detail later in this article.

Before you start lubricating, you need to choose the right mixture of oils. It's not enough to use whatever oil you have on hand - it can backfire. The oil should match the porosity of the hair.

Hair with low porosity (smooth, straight, shiny, easy to detangle, often without volume) prefers saturated oils, i.e. penetrating oils. They have a small molecular structure, due to which they penetrate the hair structure, and do not create a protective filter around it. This is important because such a protective layer can weigh down the hair and give the impression of "pods".

Saturated oils include but are not limited to:

  • murumuru and babassu butter;
  • coconut and palm oils.

Medium porosity hair (slightly wavy, voluminous, frizz-prone, easily absorbs moisture) prefers monounsaturated oils. These include, for example:

  • olive oil;
  • sweet almond, sesame, argan, avocado, moringa, tamanu, tsubaki, sea buckthorn or rice oil.

Hair with high porosity (curly, prone to dryness, frizz, tangles), on the other hand, is most favored by polyunsaturated oils, which do not fully penetrate the hair structure due to their high molecular structure. They remain on the surface, creating a protective layer on the hair, keeping moisture inside. This makes the hair heavier and easier to untangle. In addition, they are shiny and have better twist. Polyunsaturated oils include, among others:

  • oils: shea, mango, cupuaçu, cocoa;
  • oils: black cumin, borage, safflower, poppy, raspberry seeds, black cumin.

  • Dry lubrication

Rub the oil into dry hair from roots to ends, making sure that it is evenly distributed. This is the easiest and fastest method. However, it is worth remembering that it is difficult to wash off the oil - tonal means facilitate this process.

  • Oiling the foundation

Especially recommended for curls and waves. This way you can moisturize your hair before applying the oil and lock the power of the moisturizing ingredients into the hair structure.

The base for lubricating the hair depends on your preference. We distinguish:

  1. oiling the air conditioner;
  2. lubrication with a moisturizing mist (for example, a hand-made solution of water with honey or agave);
  3. oiling with a gel (for example, bamboo or aloe gel);
  4. Hydrolate oil (such as aloe vera, coconut, chamomile, or rose oil, which are great for moisturizing the skin).

This method takes a little longer, but guarantees a moisturizing effect and therefore additional benefits for your hair. In the case of low-porous strands, the use of a base is not necessary, but for highly porous strands, it will definitely be useful.

In the case of the first option, you can use a conditioner balm as a base for oiling your hair. Another option is to mix the oil with the conditioner and leave the mixture on your hair for half an hour.

  • Oiling wet hair (in the so-called decoction)

Prepare an oil-water solution in a bowl and dip your hair into it. This will coat them evenly with the oil mixture without rubbing.

  • Mist oiling

Prepare an aqueous solution with oils of your choice, but in a higher concentration. Pour the resulting liquid into a spray bottle and distribute strand by strand. It's hard to go overboard with too much oil in this method, but spraying the entire hair with a spray bottle can be quite tedious and time consuming. Therefore, we recommend this method to owners and owners of short or semi-long hair.

One water is not enough. Using water (warm - cold is less effective at removing oil) is only the first step in flushing. Then you need to emulsify the oil, i.e. use conditioner. It is best to choose the simplest moisturizing or softening conditioners, without proteins in the composition.

We recommend, for example, the BioOnly softening conditioner based on organic ingredients or the hypoallergenic Biały Jeleń product. After applying the cosmetic product to the hair, you can leave it for a few minutes so that the active ingredients work. If you are concerned about oiliness, you can use shampoo - but only at the roots, to extend the beneficial effects of oiling the hair to the entire surface of the strands.

If you apply the oil wet or over conditioner, half an hour is enough. In the case of other methods, you have complete freedom - from half an hour to several. Many people apply oil to their hair before bed, washing the oil off the next morning.
