The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV will drop $6,000 in price, now starting at $25,600.

Chevrolet Bolt returned to the market after numerous recalls due to battery fire. Now that the problem is fixed, GM is offering the Chevy Bolt at a significant discount, saving you up to $6,000.

The Chevy Bolt lineup receives a significant price cut for 2023, dropping from $31,500 to $25,600 (before $995 destination charge). This means the Chevy Bolt will have a lower MSRP than the base model Nissan Leaf, although the Leaf still qualifies for the US federal EV incentive while the Bolt does not.

New prices for Chevrolet Bolts

The price cuts apply across the lineup, with each trim and model receiving a similar price cut of approximately $6,000. The updated Bolt 2LT starts at $28,800.

The Bolt EUV will start at $27,200-31,700 and the Premier EUV at $495. Chevy has added to the EUV (not the EV) a "Redline edition" trim, which is primarily just an appearance and can be added for dollars.

Otherwise, there are no significant changes to the basic principles of the 2022 model year car. A new color, Radiant Red Tintcoat, is available at an additional cost, and dealers will start selling front and rear floor coverings.

Bolt will be the cheapest new compact car in America.

Even with last year's huge price cut, we think this will make the Bolt the cheapest new EV in America if you ignore federal tax credits and rely on MSRP. All things considered, the Leaf is still cheaper, although Nissan will likely hit the 200,000-vehicle limit later this year, especially with a decoy coming soon. The Bolt is still eligible for state and local EV incentives in some areas, so keep an eye on them and you may be able to get a better deal.

Home Chevy Bolt

The Chevy Bolt has been available since the 2017 model year and is one of the first "second generation" electric vehicles to hit the road.

"First generation" EVs had a range of mostly 100 miles, often shared a platform with a gasoline car, sometimes only made to comply with emissions laws so manufacturers would not be penalized by California and other CARB states.

But when the Bolt came out, it offered a significant upgrade in feature set, with much more power than the first-generation EVs, at a reasonable price, and with a longer range of 250 miles (238 then, 259 now) and 50 miles. DC fast charging (at kW, pedestrian by today's standards), and all in the hatchback/small SUV body style that is popular with today's car buyers.

It was a huge step forward for EVs and immediately became a solid choice for anyone embarking on EVs.

The car has also been subject to occasional significant rental discounts or price cuts from dealers, making it fairly easy to recommend to people who want an electric car at a reasonable price.

Costly flare on Bolt's trajectory

But the Bolt has had a troubled recent past: it was out of production for almost a full year while GM did a recall and revamp due to an issue with LG's batteries. Now that everything is fixed, it is possible that these recent problems are the reason for the big discounts.

Bolt's future looks uncertain

However, Bolt's future is uncertain. GM's EV strategy has changed since the Bolt was released in the 2017 model year and they are now focusing on their Ultium EV platform. This platform underpins future products: Equinox, Sierra, Silverado, GMC Hummer and Cadillac Lyriq.

Bolt predates Ultium and is currently manufactured at GM's Orion plant. The problem is that the Orion is being remade to create Ultium electric vehicles and the Bolt is not an Ultium, so we don't know if the Bolt line will continue after the remake is complete. GM has assured Bolt production will continue during the plant's conversion, but has not said if it will continue after the conversion.

If you're looking for a cheap and reliable electric car now, the Bolt is an even better option than before, if you can find it. Check stock of the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV or 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV at your local dealer and ask when they might be available.
