Many people are unaware that placing a child in a car seat wearing a thick jacket can have a negative impact on their safety.

According to a study by the UK Department for Transport, 80 per cent of car seats used contrary to the manufacturer's recommendations, with the biggest problem being incorrect belt tension. Placing a child wrapped in a thick jacket in the seat will prevent improper seat belts that could cause the child to slip out of the seat in the event of a collision.

The best way to keep your child as safe as possible in winter is to put on a thin fleece jacket and insulate the interior of the car before the trip. Once your child is tucked in and secured in the car seat, the second jacket can be put on backwards for proper warmth and safety.

Prepare your car for winter

It is also worth making sure that the car is properly prepared for it before the start of winter. Below we remind you of a few basic rules that even the best drivers forget.

Winter tires are a very important element that affects safety. It is the tires that come into direct contact with the asphalt and possibly with the road surface covered with snow or ice. Winter tires are softer than summer tires and have a deeper tread, which gives them better grip on slippery surfaces, better traction and shorter braking distances.

Before the start of the winter season, you should also check the condition of the battery, headlights and wipers. Headlights and windshield wipers are two components of good visibility that are especially important when it gets dark quickly and snow falls more often. You should also add winter washer fluid.

What to carry in the car

Always carry an ice scraper and snow brush with you. Before hiking in the mountains, it is also recommended to take snow chains with you, which will provide sufficient traction in case of heavy snowfall.

If you get stuck while traveling, it is recommended that you bring a blanket, warm clothes, and food and drink, especially if you are traveling with children. If you need to wear snow chains, gloves and comfortable winter boots will also come in handy.

Another, less obvious item you should have in your car during the winter is sunglasses. They can be especially useful when the sun's rays are additionally reflected off the surrounding snow.

In case of frosts and snowfalls

It is important to ensure good visibility by removing ice from windows, headlights and mirrors. You should also remove snow from the entire body of the car, including the roof, so that while driving, snow does not fall on cars driving behind, or, during heavy braking, does not roll off the roof onto the windshield.
