What is chatting?

Vibration is a phenomenon caused by unwanted vibrations in the processing of a piece of material, especially if the material is soft.
What is chatting?Vibration most often occurs when using incorrect transverse or turning techniques.
What is chatting? It is much less likely that this will happen at the time of the draw. Not only will it be harder to pull out the file with too much pressure if you use the wrong technique, but the workpiece is less likely to vibrate as you file lengthwise, as the vise will provide more support.
What is chatting? These vibrations cause shock waves in the workpiece and distort the surface, leaving a radial pattern that is difficult or impossible to erase.

How can you avoid talking?

What is chatting?Knocking is rare when sharpening, especially when working with wood or plastic, but there are three main things to keep in mind to help you avoid this:
What is chatting?

1 - Two hands

Always use the file with both hands so that you can apply constant, controlled, light pressure. This will prevent the file from skipping or jumping when using it.

2 - Light pressure

Do not press too hard when serving. In addition to potentially damaging the tool, applying too much weight to the file can cause the teeth to get stuck in the workpiece, resulting in jerky grinding.

3 - Keep the file clean

Make sure your file is clean and the teeth are not clogged. Clogged teeth will let the material through and clean teeth will dig into it, causing a twitching sensation. If several teeth are clogged, knocking is more likely.

What is chatting? If you are 100% sure that you are using the file correctly but are still suffering from chatter, the material you are working on may not be suitable for the file and you should contact your supplier.

How do you know when chatting is happening?

What is chatting? If you hear a nasty squealing sound from the file, or feel the file jerking against the workpiece, stop and make sure you're not doing any damage.
