What to do if the battery is dead in the car

The battery is one of the most important components in your car. If the battery is dead, it will be very difficult to start the engine, and in addition, all the settings of the on-board computer may go astray. The battery provides the starter with enough charge to crank the crankshaft and start the process of combustion of the fuel-air mixture in the engine pistons.

Whatever battery you have - a premium Bosch battery, an economy class battery like the Turkish Inci-Aku or our “Kursky Current Source” - any battery fails over time: it starts to discharge faster than the warranty requires, the plates crumble and cannot hold a charge and tension. Naturally, a logical question arises before the driver - what to do if the battery is dead.

Well, firstly, it is not necessary to allow the battery to fail. Serviced batteries need to be checked from time to time: monitor the electrolyte level, measure the voltage using an ordinary tester.

You should choose a battery according to the instructions for the car, because if you put a more powerful or vice versa less powerful battery, then it will not last you a hundred percent for a long time, and no one will replace it under warranty.

Secondly, if the battery has sat down and does not want to start the car, there are several ways to deal with the misfortune:

  • ask someone to push you - this picture is quite familiar for Russian winters and roads, squeeze the clutch all the way, turn the ignition switch and try to immediately shift to a higher gear, in no case turn off the car and let the battery recharge from the generator;
  • if you are not in a particular hurry, you can recharge the battery using a starter charger, it is usually available in parking lots, and many drivers have it on the farm, connect the terminals one by one, set the desired voltage value - the fast charging mode can charge the battery in just three hours , but the battery life will also decrease, the desulfation mode is set for a longer time and is designed to revive the battery, whose life is coming to an end;
  • well, the most familiar way is to light up the battery - you stop someone with the same characteristics as yours, connect his battery to yours through the “crocodiles”, after a while the battery will be recharged and you will be able to get to the nearest auto parts store.

More complex problems await drivers of cars equipped with electronic locks. If the alarm turns on, then nothing can be done, any lock can be opened with an ordinary key, on budget or domestic cars, the alarm is very easily turned off, and when the battery is dead, it may not work at all.

Another thing is when there are no key locks at all and it is problematic to open the hood. You will have to look for a working battery, get close to the generator from below and connect the positive terminal to the positive on the generator, and the negative terminal to ground, that is, to any element of the engine or body.

If the battery is discharged in winter, then sometimes it can simply be brought into a warm room for a while, it will heat up a little and give the necessary charge. In general, many drivers with experience advise taking the battery into heat for the winter.

The procedure for removing and installing some “forty-five” or “sixty” is absolutely not difficult, but you can save a little money on buying a new battery.
