what is it with mercedes? What does AMG mean and how is it different from other cars?

If you go to the salon of an official Mercedes dealer in Moscow, then along with the main model line of numerous hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs, you will see the AMG model range. The prices here, I must say, are quite high. So, if the "cheapest" G-class SUV to date - we already wrote on Vodi.su that they are also called "Geliki" - costs about 6,7 million rubles, then the Mercedes-AMG G 65 model will cost from 21 million rubles.

Why such a big price difference? And what does this have to do with the "AMG" prefix in the name? We will try to give an intelligible answer to this question.

Mercedes-AMG division

This division was created back in 1967 and its main task was to tune serial cars for use in sports. We remind you that the concept of "tuning" in Germany and in the West in general has a completely different meaning - this is not a change in the exterior, but an improvement in technical characteristics.

Based on this, it becomes clear why there is such a difference in price between the two Gelendvagen models.

Just look at the characteristics of the engine:

• Mercedes G 350 d for 6,7 million rubles is equipped with a three-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine with 245 horsepower;
• on the Mercedes-AMG G 65 model, there is a 6-liter unit for 12 cylinders, the power of which reaches as much as 630 hp. — which is why it is considered one of the most powerful all-wheel drive SUVs in the world.

Even if we look at the prices of more modest Mercedes car classes, such as C-class sedans, we see a similar situation there. Thus, the most affordable S-180 model costs 2,1 million, the S-200 with 4Matic all-wheel drive will cost 2 rubles. Well, for tuned cars you will have to pay much larger amounts:

• AMG C 43 4Matic - 3,6 million;
• Mercedes-AMG C 63 - 4,6 million;
• AMG C 63 S - 5 rubles.

Well, the difference in engines is also noticeable. The last model on the list squeezes out 4 horses with its 510 liter engine. And the Mercedes C 180 is only 150.

Initially, such advanced cars were intended for participation in motorsport: 24-hour Spa races, Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, FIA GT, Le Mans. In addition, Mercedes-AMG supplies its cars as safety and medical cars for Formula 1 circuit racing.

Naturally, rich people liked such powerful cars and they gladly began to buy them at such immodest prices. So, the Mercedes CLK GTR, which was assembled at the AMG division plant in Affalterbach, entered the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive production car. The recording was made in 2000 and the car at that time cost just over 1,5 million US dollars. They were equipped with a 6,9-liter engine producing 612 hp. The car accelerated to hundreds in 3,8 seconds, and the maximum speed reached 310 km / h.

It is clear that tuning concerns not only engines. The AMG division is also involved in other developments:

• branded dual-clutch automatic transmissions;
• light alloy wheels;
• ultralight alloys based on aluminum and magnesium;
• interior and exterior elements.

To achieve such excellent performance is possible by attracting the best engineers who manage to find completely new solutions. For example, thanks to the development of a specially shaped cylinder head, it became possible to install such powerful engines with 8-12 cylinders on passenger cars.
