What does the flashing warning lights on the dashboard mean?

Your vehicle's on-board diagnostic system (OBD II) monitors other on-board systems and provides you with important information. For most cars, the only way to relay this information is through warning lights on the dashboard (some newer, more expensive cars may use the infotainment system to relay some information). It is important that you know what each light on the dashboard means and what it means when it comes on.

What does the flashing warning lights on the dashboard mean?

There is no clear answer why the warning light on the dashboard may flash. Each light in your dashboard is tied to a different system. For example, the OBD II system on your vehicle only controls the Check Engine light. The ABS system is tied to the ABS light. The tire pressure monitoring system uses a TPMS indicator (which may stand for TPMS or may be a picture of a tire). Moreover, there are different types of outbreaks that you should be aware of.

  • Flashes briefly when starting the engine and then goes out: It is normal for the warning lights on the instrument panel to flash briefly immediately after starting the engine and then go out. Each system performs a self-test when the vehicle is turned on. The indicators turn off after the systems are tested.

  • Flashes and then stays onA: If one of your warning lights on your dashboard flashes briefly and then stays on, it means there is a problem with the system that the indicator is linked to. For example, your Check Engine light may flash and then stay on if the engine is misfiring or if one of your oxygen sensors is malfunctioning.

  • Flashing non-stopA: Typically, only the Check Engine light flashes continuously, and only if the OBD II system detects multiple problems. Constant flashing can indicate various problems, so it's best not to drive and call a mechanic to inspect the car as soon as possible.

There are other indicators that may flash non-stop, including the following:

  • oil light: Indicates a sudden drop in oil pressure.

  • temperature light: Indicates that your engine is about to overheat.

After all, whether the warning light comes on, stays on, or starts flashing, it indicates a problem, and a potentially serious one at that (especially with flashing lights on the dash). It is important to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic immediately.
