What does the steering lock warning light mean?

Locking the steering wheel can sometimes seem inconvenient, but it helps prevent your car from being stolen. When the ignition is off, when you turn the steering wheel, a spring-loaded lever engages and locks everything in place. This will prevent anyone from moving your car unless they get the real keys.

You don't need to activate the steering wheel lock every time you get out of the car, as it will automatically activate if someone tries to turn the steering wheel. Some vehicles have an indicator on the dashboard to let you know if the steering lock is active.

What does the steering lock indicator mean?

The power steering lock indicator light is different from the power steering warning light, indicating a real steering problem, so don't mix them up.

To disengage the steering lock, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to at least the first position while turning the steering wheel in any direction. It doesn't take too much effort to turn the key and unlock the steering wheel. The steering lock indicator should only come on when the ignition is off and the lock is on. If you see this happening at any other time, you should have the vehicle checked by a qualified technician.

Is it safe to drive with the steering lock light on?

Usually you will never see this indicator on the road. Even if it lights up while driving, it is unlikely that the steering will actually lock up. If it comes on while driving, try restarting the engine after safely parking. While the lights go out, you can continue to drive the car, but keep an eye on it for the next few weeks.

If this warning light does not go out or comes back on later, have a qualified technician check the vehicle to find out more about the problem. Our certified technicians are always available if you have any problems with your steering lock or steering system in general.
