What does the oil pressure warning light mean?

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car. Without enough oil or oil pressure, an engine can fail in seconds. In addition to lubrication, engine oil helps cool, seal, clean and protect engine components from repeated blows.

Car manufacturers use an oil pressure warning light on the dashboard to alert the driver if the oil pressure gets too low. Some vehicles are able to distinguish between low oil and insufficient oil pressure, so you'll know if the pump is bad or if you just need to add some more oil.

What does the oil pressure indicator mean

When you start the engine, the light should come on for a second or two to check the bulb. As soon as the engine starts, the indicator will turn off if everything is in order. If the light stays on, shut off the engine immediately and check the oil level on the dipstick.

Whenever you check the oil level, always remember to wipe the dipstick, insert it back into the engine, and then read the level. Otherwise, your reading will be inaccurate. The same applies if you are driving and the light comes on. Stop and check the oil level as quickly and safely as possible. If the overall level is normal, the fuel pump or oil pressure sensor is probably faulty. Replacing the pump or something faulty should turn off the lights.
