What does the airbag warning light mean?

When the airbag warning light stays on, the airbags will not deploy for seated passengers in a collision. This may be due to a sensor malfunction.

The airbag system in your vehicle, sometimes referred to as the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS), deploys in a fraction of a second to provide cushioning in the event of a collision. Airbags use sensors in the seat belts and the seats themselves to determine if the airbag should deploy. Thus, if there is no one in the passenger seat, the airbag will not deploy unnecessarily.

What does the airbag warning light mean

Every time the engine is started, the computer quickly checks the system to make sure everything is working properly. When you start the car, the airbag warning light comes on for a few seconds and should automatically turn off if everything is OK. If the light stays on, the computer has detected a problem and will store a code to help determine the cause. Most importantly, if the light stays on, the airbag system is disabled to try and prevent accidental airbag deployment. Some common problems include a faulty seat belt switch or seat sensor. On older vehicles, the clock spring on the steering wheel often wears out, causing the computer to prevent the airbag from deploying.

What to do if the airbag warning light is on

Check the seat belts for debris as this may interfere with the movement of the derailleur. Most likely, the problem will not be so simple, and you will need more information to find out the cause.

If the light stays on, you will need to scan the car's computer for codes to determine what the problem is. Most vehicles have a reset procedure that must also be followed to turn off the lights. Always remember that working on airbags is dangerous as they are critical to your safety and should only be handled by trained professionals.
