What do the headlight indicators mean?

Headlight indicators help you know if your vehicle's headlights, taillights, and high beams are on.

Headlights are an integral part of modern cars. Without them, it would not only be extremely difficult to see what is moving ahead of you, but also to locate other vehicles on the road.

Your headlights usually have several settings, so it's important to know the difference between your regular headlights, taillights, and high beams. Not all cars will indicate that the headlights are on, but they will at least let you know when the high beams are on by flashing an indicator on the dash.

As mentioned earlier, your headlight control dial will have several different options to choose from. The first setting is usually a symbol of two lights pointing outward. These are taillights that help cars behind you identify you at night. This setting does not turn on the headlights, so be sure to press the dial again if you are driving at night. The second setting, shown using an image of a single light source pointing to the left, turns on the actual headlights. Your car's high beam is usually activated by lightly pushing forward or backward on the turn signal lever. The high beam symbol is very similar to regular headlights, but it is one of the few blue lights on the dashboard.

Is it safe to drive with headlights on?

Headlights not only help you see what's ahead, but also allow everyone around you to see you. Whether it's an oncoming car or someone walking down the street, driving without headlights also endangers everyone around you.

High beams these days are like a miniature sun and can be hard to see after shining them in your face, so make sure you turn your high beams off when there are cars in front of you.
