What will help with skidding on a winter road

In winter, an abnormal situation during driving is more likely due to snow and ice on the roadway. Is it possible to get out of such a mess without loss, using only the advice of experienced drivers or reading contra-emergency stories on the Internet?

Every year, the onset of a full-fledged climatic winter is accompanied by the appearance of a mass of fresh videos on the Internet, in which cars on the roadway slide, skid, spin and fly into a ditch. Very often, such “movie masterpieces” are accompanied by explanations from the authors of the epithets abounding in “suddenly”, “unexpectedly”, “rubber failed”, etc. But you should take a closer look at what is happening in such a video and you understand that the author “to put it mildly” is inadequate to the situation on the road .

For example, we see in the frame, long before the accident, the hood of the car “walks” left and right relative to the direction of the car. But the driver does not pay attention to this and continues, as if nothing had happened, to put pressure on the gas pedal. And soon “unexpectedly” (but only for the author of the video) the car starts to turn and it goes into a snow-covered ditch or flies into oncoming traffic. Or another situation. The track sprinkled with snow, the car with the registrar goes at a speed quite adequate to the road conditions. A smooth turn is planned ahead and the driver prudently, as it seems to him, presses the brake - to slow down!

This immediately leads to a "sudden" skidding of the stern and the subsequent flight of the car into a ditch. Or in general, on a straight road, the car slightly touches the snow slurry on the side of the road with its right wheels and it starts to smoothly pull to the side. What is the driver doing? That's right: he throws the gas and starts frantically jerking the steering wheel in different directions, as a result of which the car "unexpectedly" goes into an uncontrolled flight. After watching videos with similar content, it is not the behavior of drivers that is surprising, but something completely different.

Surprisingly, for some reason, it is generally accepted that the heroes of these videos can be given a dozen tips on how to drive in emergency situations, and after that they will be able to drive safely. Otherwise, for what purpose are dozens of articles on this topic written and published annually on the Internet and in print media? The authors of these opuses, in all seriousness, are trying to convey to the naive reader what exactly needs to be done with the gas pedal and in which direction to turn the steering wheel in the event of a “demolition of the front axle”. Or boringly describe the subtleties of counter-steering when skidding on a rear-wheel drive.

It is no longer important even the fact that most of these "experts-advisers" themselves know how to perform such techniques, only mainly in their own imagination. The most ridiculous (sad in this case) is that it is useless and even dangerous to teach something to a counter-emergency person who is not able to adequately determine the safe speed for specific road conditions and a specific car.

In the same way, it is pointless to talk about some kind of driving technique with a proud owner of a driver's license, who automatically reacts to an emergency situation in the only way possible for him - by dropping all the pedals and clinging to the steering wheel with a stranglehold. It must be admitted that at the moment there are a majority of such drivers on Russian roads. Therefore, nothing will help them and those whom they crash into in the skid that has already begun. Unfortunately.
