What caused a fatal accident involving more than 100 cars and trucks on an icy Dallas-Fort Worth highway

The slippery road surface left a long line of wrecked cars, with drivers trapped under piles of broken metal.

Last Thursday at around 6:00 am, 130 vehicles collided on Interstate 35W outside of Fort Worth, Texas.

The low temperatures that Texas is experiencing caused the rain to freeze the asphalt, ending in an accident that involved trailers, SUVs, pickup trucks, subcompacts, SUVs, and even army vehicles.

Sadly, at least six people died and 65 others were injured in the horrific accident, authorities said.

The slippery road surface created a long line of crushed cars, and the drivers were under piles of metal fragments.

Unable to control the vehicles, the drivers crashed one by one until they reached a nearly 1.5 mile long line. Rescuers even had to sprinkle a mixture of sand and salt to improve conditions and help with the needs of those involved in the accident. 

At least 65 victims sought medical attention in hospitals, 36 of them were taken by ambulance, several people were seriously injured., a representative of MedStar, an ambulance company in the area.

Authorities said the accident happened at a time when many hospital workers and members of the ambulance crew were on their way to work or home, and some of them were involved in the accident, including police officers.

Zavadsky also explained that the road conditions were so slippery that even several rescuers slipped and fell to the ground.
