What is a floor chisel?
Content
Floor chisels are often used when breaking down and raising floorboards. They are usually somewhat longer than other chisels, and the cutting edge of the chisel is designed to cut through the tongue and groove portion of the tongue and groove deck and then help lift the board.
Flooring chisels may sometimes be referred to as "electrician's chisels" or "electrician's bolsters".
It should be noted that there may be an overlap between floor chisels and electrician's chisels, although traditionally the angle on the floor chisel is sharper.
Sometimes a slightly different design may be used, such as this bent section designed to help get the lever on the floorboard.
What are grooved floorboards?
Ledge and groove floorboards (such as the one shown at left) are a type of floorboard with a ledge on one side and a recessed groove on the other. The raised section is inserted into a recessed slot in the adjacent floorboard.
How to use a flooring chisel to lift floorboards:
Step 1 - break the tongueIf the user wants to lift the tongue and groove floorboards, the tongue must be broken to free them.
Before removing the flooring, it is important to remove all skirting boards, as they will get in the way.
Step 2 - Raise the floorboardThe floorboard can then be raised with a chisel. |
