What is an Irish shovel?

Statement

This shovel was traditionally used in Ireland, where it was suited to the humid Irish climate. It has been designed for digging in particularly heavy, impenetrable soils where cultivation is more difficult.

Its long blade with a pointed end is ideal for easy insertion, while the curved sides can cut through hard soil and roots.

The wide blade shape at the shoulder is also ideal for moving excavated soil to the side and for moving aggregates such as pebbles, sand and gravel.

Is there a difference between an Irish shovel and a western country shovel?

Any difference is negligible, so don't let that put you off. Both shovels can work equally well with each other.

The Irish shovel usually has a slightly longer blade with a large point at the end, whereas the western country shovel has a slightly wider and flatter face.

This is not always the case, as designs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Blade

What is an Irish shovel? The strongest heads (blade and socket) are forged from a single piece of steel, meaning that the shaft-to- socket connection is either a solid socket or, more rarely, a shackle connection.

Blade length is usually around 350 mm (14 inches) and 250 mm (10 inches) at its widest point.

Shaft

What is an Irish shovel? The steel shovel should have high quality welds (metal joints) that should not have any open spots for water to enter. This will reduce the risk of internal rust and damage.

There should be no torn seams: the seams should look flawless and as smooth as possible.

What is an Irish shovel? An extra long shaft (usually without a handle) makes it easier to dig in heavy soils with the power of the levers. It also provides greater digging depth, especially when working in deep trenches.

The shaft length can be from 1.21 m (48 in.) to 1.82 m (72 in.).

What is an Irish shovel?Use an insulated shaft when working near cables or power lines.
