What is the BMW M Sport package and is it worth it?

Most BMW vehicles are available with several different trim and equipment packages, but the most popular in the UK is the M Sport.

The name refers to "BMW M", a division of BMW that designs and manufactures race cars and high-performance road cars such as the M2 and M5. M Sport models aren't as extreme as these cars, but they do have a sportier look and feel than other BMW models, giving you the experience of owning a high-performance car without the compromises or higher costs they sometimes require.

So, what do you actually get if you choose the BMW M Sport model?

Exterior BMW M Sport

The BMW M Sport includes many styling changes over less sporty models. Outside, there is a deeper front bumper with larger air intakes. On the sides there are "M" badges behind the front wheels, deep "skirts" under the doors, and at the rear the bumper is again deeper. There is also a small spoiler on the trunk lid on sedans or above the rear window on models with a full-length trunk lid. Big wheels, lower suspension and blue or red brake calipers behind the wheels complete the look.

BMW M Sport interior style

Inside, there are more styling changes, although they vary slightly between different BMW vehicles. These include sport seats that keep you in place through corners, a thicker steering wheel with an 'M' logo on the bottom, metallic or carbon-effect dashboard trim, metal pedals and 'M Sport' logo treadplates.

BMW M Sport driving experience

M Sport models have bigger wheels, different suspension and bigger brakes than other BMW models. Wider tires provide better traction, the suspension reduces the car's lean in corners, and the brakes bring it to a stop faster. Add that together and that means M Sport cars are more fun to drive. And that's saying a lot, because even non-M Sport models handle better than most competing cars.

The trade-off is that M Sport models tend not to be as comfortable, because their lower suspension and low-profile tires mean you feel the bumps in the road more easily. Keep in mind, though, that if you're looking at a used M Sport model, it can have optional adaptive or air suspension that smooths out the ride to near-luxury levels.

M Sport cars also don't go faster than other models because they're available with exactly the same engines as every other BMW. Not that any BMW is slow.

Options BMW M Sport

BMWs tend to be very well equipped. Most models have satellite navigation, climate control, smartphone connectivity and more. M Sport models get roughly the same equipment as SE models, though it depends on which BMWs you're comparing.

Does the BMW M Sport package cost more?

M Sport models are more expensive than equivalent SE models whether you're buying new or used, but you can feel the sportier looks and driving experience are worth it. Also, because they are so popular, M Sport models tend to retain their value especially well.

Which BMW vehicles are available with M Sport trim?

Most BMW vehicles are available in M Sport trim. The exceptions are the i3, iX3 and iX electric vehicles, the i8 sports car and the M2, M3, M4, M5, M6 and M8 performance vehicles.

Is the BMW M Sport package worth it?

You should always buy the car you like and if you like the BMW M Sport it's worth the extra cost. The sporty looks and stiffer suspension (if installed) won't be to everyone's liking, but otherwise there are no downsides.
