What is an oil filter housing?

The oil filter housing allows engine oil to efficiently pass through the oil filter and eventually reach vital engine parts.

Keep in mind:

  • Oil filter housings are found in almost every engine and are responsible for holding the oil filter in place.
  • Oil filters are responsible for circulating clean oil in the engine.
  • They are affected by the oil that passes through them, so if you let your oil stay dirty for a long time, it can contaminate the oil filter housings.

How it is done:

  • Relieve pressure in the fuel system
  • Drain the cooling system
  • Remove lower intake manifold
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors for the oil temperature sensor and the oil pressure sensor.
  • Remove the five bolts and lift up the oil filter housing.
  • Install the coolant hose to the filter housing.
  • Tighten the housing bolts and connect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  • Connect the oil temperature sensor electrical connector.
  • Install lower intake manifold
  • Fill cooling system

Our recommendations:

Avoid using spin-on oil filters because this can cause many parts to be recycled. Materials such as metal and special silicone rubber that are impervious to the elements would take decades to break down if thrown into a landfill.

What are the common symptoms that indicate the need to replace the oil filter housing?

  • oil change light on
  • Dripping oil from under the car
  • Low oil pressure

How important is this service?

The oil filter housing is an important part of keeping your car's engine lubricated and providing oil to all parts of the engine to prevent friction and damage.
