What is an oil dipstick and how to read it correctly

If you're having trouble reading your car's dipstick, it could be because the oil is cold or very dirty. This dipstick is important and you must take care of it to know the condition of your engine lube.

All the elements that make up a car are important, and each of them performs a function that sooner or later we become aware of. The oil dipstick is an integral part of the engine. 

To know the condition and level of oil in the engine, drivers always use the dipstick.

What is an engine oil dipstick?

All internal combustion engines have an oil dipstick, including diesel engines. The dipstick is a long, flat metal rod used to measure the level of liquids, especially oil in a car engine.

In other words, the dipstick is responsible for determining the level and condition of the oil.  

The position of the dipstick depends on the type of engine in your vehicle. Typically, in the engine bay, you'll see a dipstick knob that looks like a yellow plastic ring with "Engine Oil" written on it.

Five easy steps to check your car's oil level.

1.- The vehicle must be parked on a level surface with the engine switched off and cold. If you check the oil level on a warm engine, you will most likely get erroneous readings.

2.- Locate the engine oil dipstick. These rods always have a different color handle than the others.

3.- Remove the dipstick and clean it from start to finish.

4.- Insert the dipstick again and check the tip of the dipstick where the level marks are.

5.- The correct oil level must be between the two lines on the tip of the dipstick.

If the oil level is low, it is recommended to add oil to avoid vehicle breakdowns such as engine failure. If the oil level is above the mark, the excess oil must be removed for the vehicle to operate properly.
