What is a mini vise?
Content
The mini hand vise is a miniature version of the hand vise. The jaws of a mini hand vise can only open 5 mm (approx. 0.2 inches) compared to a hand vise which can open up to 45 mm (approx. 2 inches). They are called mini hand vise as they have a very small design.
Its design differs from the standard hand vise in that the handle is a separate component of the two jaws.
What is it used for? | |
Due to the smaller opening width of the jaws, the capabilities of the mini hand vise are limited, i.e. they can only be used to hold very small and thin workpieces. However, its lower opening capacity means it is an ideal vise for jewelry making and repair as it is designed to hold small pieces such as metal wire, pins or needles to work with.
The mini hand vise can be used with the universal holder for many applications including wire bending or shaping. The Universal Work Holder is a multi-purpose tool that can be used for clamping and shaping, as well as many other tasks. It has several steel pins that can be placed on its surface and the wire is then bent around those pins into the desired shape.
It can also be useful for holding small or difficult cutting objects securely, as there is no risk of the user injuring their hand while holding such objects.
It is also widely used for fly tying, which is the process of making an artificial fly that fishermen can use to catch fish.
Features | |
Most handheld mini vises have a jaw opening of no more than 5 mm (approximately 0.2 inches), which is the smallest capacity of any vise type.
The mini hand vise is available with a steel or wooden handle. The difference between the two is that a steel handle is often heavier but thinner than a wood handle, meaning it weighs more but has less to grab onto.
While this may make a wooden handle more desirable for many users, a steel handle is more durable and less prone to chipping than a wooden handle. For more information, visit Metal and wooden vise parts
Some handheld mini vise models may also have the additional feature of a hole through their handles that allows wires, tubes, and other round objects to be fully inserted. This gives the user extra clamping space and support when handling long round objects. There is a type of vise called a hollow-handled vise that is specifically designed with this feature.
