What is a start capacitor in a car

The ignition capacitor is a capacitor designed to hold a small amount of current in the engine's ignition system. Its main purpose is to serve as a ground for electrical loads.

Cars have an ignition system that consists of several elements that together make the car start.

The start capacitor or starting capacitor is an element of the car's ignition system that helps to start the car correctly when the key is turned or the button is pressed.

What is a start capacitor?

A start capacitor is an electrical capacitor that changes the current in one or more windings of a single-phase AC induction motor, creating a rotating magnetic field.

As the name suggests, the start capacitor has the function of turning these devices on when connected to a light source, increasing the starting torque of the motor so that the motor can turn on and off quickly, creating a rotating magnetic field that induces a voltage.

How many types of starting capacitors are there?

The two most common types are the start capacitor and the dual run capacitor. The unit of capacitance for these capacitors is microfarad. Older capacitors may be labeled with the obsolete terms "mfd" or "MFD", which also stands for microfarad.

What is the function of a start capacitor?

The start capacitor has the function of supporting the ignition of the car, containing a small amount of current. The main job of a capacitor is to serve as a ground for an electrical load, preventing the electrodes from sparking against each other.

Unfortunately, this capacitor is also prone to breakdowns and defects, which we will notice on the vehicle as car starting problems. The bad side of this symptom is that it can occur for some other reason, and the only way to determine that it is related to the starting capacitor is that it is accompanied by two other symptoms.

Symptoms of a Bad Start Capacitor

1.-Strong static on the radio

If the capacitor cannot hold a charge, there will be a lot of sparking in the ignition system. Electric charge and the magnetic interference it creates will cause a significant amount of static electricity to build up in your radio. Stations that you normally hear clearly will now be very difficult to distinguish and will be out of tune. Since sparking occurs only when the engine is running, the radio will operate normally with the engine off and only the battery running. 

2.- Yellow spark

If the capacitor is faulty, this can sometimes be determined by looking at the engine idling. The tip cover needs to be removed and some motors won't run without it, but if the capacitor is bad you will probably see a big yellow spark between the two contact points. 

3.- Problems with starting the car

If the capacitor is defective, the contact points may be damaged due to excessive sparking and the vehicle may be difficult to start and will also not run.
