What is a garden rake?
| Garden rakes are sometimes referred to as soil rakes, level heads, soil rakes, flathead rakes, or onion rakes. They are designed to loosen hard soil and form planting rows. They come in two varieties: flat-headed or curved-headed, depending on how the head is attached to the handle. | |
 | Both flat and curved garden rakes have straight heads with curved teeth either in a curve or at right angles. The head of a flat head rake is usually attached to the handle with a single pivot in the middle. The tips of the bow are attached to the handle on both sides with two brackets. | |

 | The teeth of a garden rake are rigid and are usually made of steel. They are relatively short and thick, with enough space between them for larger debris such as rocks to pass through. They are designed to move over compacted or clay soil, turning it over and breaking it, making its structure thinner. The flat part of the head can be used to level soil and other ground cover such as bark and sand. | |
 | For lighter, thinner soil types, there are garden rakes with finer teeth that are not as strong as other garden rakes. They sometimes have narrower heads for use in smaller spaces. They can be used to remove old plants and weeds from these light soil types, but are not suitable for use in heavily compacted soil. | |
 | A garden rake has a long handle, typically 1.2 m (47 inches) to 1.7 m (67 inches). This allows you to reach pretty far with every hit. Garden rake heads are typically about 300 mm (12 in) wide.
