Citroën Berlingo 1.6 HDi (80 kW) Multispace

If you look at cars on European roads, it turns out that seven seats in a car is complete nonsense, even more than six. But what about a financially average family with four children? How to mobilize it?

The offer of a seven-seater car is not very large, but it can no longer be neglected. It makes sense that you can't buy a seven-seater coupe, much less a roadster (after all, this is complete nonsense, since a roadster means a two-seater convertible, but no less if a more visual explanation), even a station wagon is still problematic.

Simple: no room. Seven seats just takes space. The limousine vans seem perfect, but. ... Cars like the Berlingo (for which we have not even been able to find a suitable name yet) are very popular with young families. How can they not be? These are not the best dose of design, but they are practical. First of all, it is very spacious.

So this is a Berlingo: with seven seats, with the last two in the third row and this one in the trunk. Therefore, it is, of course, smaller, but the seat can be folded, folded, and thus reclaim most of the main space in the trunk. However, if the owner needs them, he simply places them in the main position, and the roller above the trunk places the box intended for it right at the end of the trunk, right in front of the five doors.

The two rear seats offer noticeably less space than the other seats, which is logical in itself, but also acceptable if such a Berlingo is intended for a large family with children. Therefore, if we are referring to children as passengers in the sixth and seventh seats, even a little uncomfortable crawling in these seats will not be a big obstacle to use. The second type is the same as the other Berlings: the same size, individual and removable one at a time.

Except for the last two places, this Berlingo is the same as everyone else. It has a vertical rear end and a huge, rather heavy lift door (difficult to close!) And thus makes the most of the rear space.

It has sliding doors which bring mainly advantages, but also some disadvantages; at the top of the central pillar inside there is a huge bulla (which hides part of the closing mechanism), the glasses in them are not classically raised (but are shifted in a horizontal direction), and only a small box of chewing gum can be placed in a box in them.

Its chassis doesn't have to be sporty, so it can perfectly absorb short bumps (like a speed bump) or pits and make the ride comfortable. There are many open and closed drawers in the cabin, but above all, it is useful so that passengers can put their small items in them. And the interior space creates a sense of airiness due to its size.

The front-seat passengers clearly have the most space around them and the most luxurious seats, but the fault is that the seat is too flat (the front seat is not raised enough), which in practice is inconvenient when braking.

The driver would also prefer a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the gap between the front seats also has a nice feature (basically, you expect a larger box there) - you can safely place, for example, a shopping bag or a backpack. .

Among the small solutions, it is worth noting the inputs for musical accessories (USB and aux) under the radio and next to the drawer where you can store a small player with music files in mp3 format. Assuming that the target group of such a Berlingo is a young family, this equipment will undoubtedly meet with approval. Just like bluetooth for a cell phone.

Probably the best choice for (also this) Berlingo is a 110 horsepower turbodiesel, which develops enough power to drive decently fast even with higher body loads, i.e. when the seats are fully occupied. Some bitterness remains; with the new generation of Berlingos turbodiesels "lost" 0 liters of volume, which also "took away" some torque.

However, this new generation engine is very quiet, calm and unfailingly flexible, that is, it hides the character of the turbo engine well. And it can also handle a large body with quite a bit of fuel - consumption below seven liters per 100 kilometers is far from utopian and a very real option if a driver with a motor or accelerator can be moderate.

The gearbox is still the less good side of this Citroën - especially when stationary, the lever gives a very unreliable feel (about shifting into gear), but it does improve a bit in motion. With moderate engine performance, front-wheel drive is a simple, reliable and safe solution for transferring power on the road, but driving, at least in deteriorating under-wheel conditions, will be safer with ESP.

Except for this shortcoming, which has also become a standard rather than a luxury in our country, this Berlingo seems like the perfect car for large young families. It is clear that without seven seats, he would not have passed.
