Citroën C5 Break 2.2 HDi Exclusive

The diesel partnership signed by PSA and Ford has proven successful several times – the 1.6 HDi, the 100kW 2.0 HDi, the six-cylinder 2.7 HDi – and all indications are that this time too. The fundamentals have not changed. They picked up a familiar engine and started it up again.

The surviving direct injection system was replaced by the latest generation Common Rail, which fills the cylinders through piezoelectric injectors, the design of the combustion chambers was redesigned, the injection pressure was increased (1.800 bar) and the flexible turbocharger, which was still "in", was replaced, two were installed under the hood, put in parallel. This is dictated by current trends and the advantages of this "design" are easily noticeable. Even if you are not an expert in mechanical engineering.

173 "horses" - a considerable force. Even in big cars like the C5. However, how they react to the driver's commands - crazy or polite - largely depends on the factory settings. Even more than engine design. The problem with internal combustion engines is that when we increase their power, on the other hand, we decrease their usability in the lower operating range. And in recent years, this has already proven itself on some diesels with forced injection. While they provide tremendous power at the top, they die almost completely at the bottom. What worries me the most is the reaction of the turbocharger. It will be too long before he can take a full breath, and the tugs he responds with are too sharp for the ride to be enjoyable.

Obviously, PSA and Ford engineers are very aware of this problem, otherwise they would not have made what they are. By installing small turbochargers in parallel, they completely changed the character of the engine and pushed it to the top of its peers in terms of convenience and performance. Since the turbochargers are small they can react quickly and more importantly the former operate at very low speed while the latter assist in the 2.600 to 3.200 rpm range. The result is a smooth response to the driver's commands and an extremely comfortable ride provided by this engine. Ideal for C5.

Many people would certainly resent this machine. For example, a button-studded center console or an overly plastic interior that lacks prestige. But when it comes to comfort, the C5 sets its own standards in this class. No classic can swallow bumps as comfortably as its hydropneumatic suspension. And the overall design of the car is also subject to a comfortable driving style. Wide and comfortable seats, power steering, equipment - we didn't miss anything in the test C5 that could make the ride even more enjoyable - not least because of the space, which the C5 really has a lot of. Even right behind.

But no matter how we turn it around, the fact remains that the most striking feature of this car is the engine at the end. The ease with which he leaves the low working area, the comfort with which he indulges himself on ordinary roads, and the power with which he convinces the driver in the upper working area is something we simply have to confess to him. And if you are a fan of French comfort, then the combination of the Citroën C5 with this engine is without a doubt one of the best on offer at the moment.

evaluation

  • Undoubtedly, if you value French comfort, love Citroën and have enough money to afford such a motorized (and equipped) C5, then don't hesitate. Don't miss out on comfort (hydropneumatic suspension!) Or spaciousness. If they are, you will be disturbed by completely different things. Maybe unpleasant, but therefore very minor errors.

We praise and reproach
