DAWS - Driver Attention Warning System

Sleepiness warning system developed by SAAB. The DAWS uses two miniature infrared cameras, one inserted into the base of the first roof pillar, the other at the center of the dashboard and pointing straight at the driver's eyes. The images collected by the two cameras are analyzed by special software that, if the movement of the eyelids indicates a hint of drowsiness, or if the driver is not looking at the road in front of him, activates a series of beeps.

The system uses a sophisticated algorithm that measures how often the driver blinks. If the cameras detect that they remain off for too long, indicating potential sleep, they will trigger three alarms.

The cameras are also capable of tracking the movements of the driver's eyeball and head. As soon as the driver's eyes are diverted from the focus area (the center of the windshield), a timer is triggered. If the driver's eyes and head do not turn back towards the road in front of the vehicle within about two seconds, the seat vibrates and stops only when the situation does not return to normal.

Infrared image processing determines whether the driver retains a peripheral view of the road ahead of him and therefore allows a longer period of time to pass before the seat vibrates.
