DCT, CVT or AMT: how different transmission types work in an automatic car

All cars run on the same type of transmission; without it, they would not be able to function. There is an automatic transmission type and a manual transmission type. In the automaton group we can find three types: DCT, CVT and AMT.

The transmission in all vehicles is vital, without this system the car simply could not move forward. Currently, there are several types of transmissions, which, although they have the same purpose, but work differently.

There are two main types of transmissions in cars: manual and automatic. Either one is the key to a system known as a transmission and links the rear of the engine to the differential via a driveshaft. They transfer power from the engine to the drive wheels through the differential.

However, within automatic there are three types:

1.-Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)

The DCT or Dual Clutch Transmission is a bit heavier as it has a lot of moving parts and gears.

The DCT has two clutches that control the ratio of odd and even gears, with the former having an odd set of gears. This transmission also uses two shafts that control those gear ratios that are already divided, with the odd one inside the even and longer one.

The benefits of the DCT automatic transmission lie in driver comfort and efficiency. Gear shifting is so smooth that you won't feel a jolt when shifting gears. And since there are no interruptions in transmission, it has better efficiency.

2.- Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

The CVT automatic transmission operates with an infinite gear ratio, which allows it to have the best efficiency in automatic transmission systems better than DCT.

Depending on the speed of rotation of the crankshaft, the length of the pulley is changed by changing the gear at the same time. Even changing the pulley by a millimeter means that a new gear ratio comes into play, which, in essence, gives you an infinite gear ratio.

3.- Automatic manual transmission (AMT)

The AMT automatic transmission is one of the weakest systems and its only advantage over other systems is that it is cheaper.

Pressing the clutch disengages the engine from the transmission, allowing you to change gears, a process that happens every time you change gear. The clutch is released automatically by hydraulic actuators. Accordingly, various gear ratios change.
