Cheap caravans tempt potential buyers. This is a chance to enjoy the benefits of RV living for relatively little money. Their big advantage is their lower price, but there are a few key elements to consider before purchasing.

In this article, we'll cover what to keep in mind before buying a used van and where to look for cheap trailers. We will analyze prices and explain the legal formalities associated with registering a trailer purchased in Poland or abroad.

Cheap trailers and customer needs 

Some people are looking for a registered, insured and ready to go trailer in which to spend their holiday or weekend away. Others are looking for a mobile home that they will use only permanently, that is, on their site. There is also a group for which the trailer should become a temporary office, for example at a construction site, or perhaps a location for security at the site.

How much does a caravan cost? The correct answer to this question is from several thousand to several hundred. The cheapest trailers with equipment (although, of course, you may have some doubts about its condition) can be found for less than PLN 10. There are also much more expensive models on the market. The financial ceiling in caravans is raised very high. Suffice it to mention that the latest models with a rich package of the flagship trailer of the Slovenian manufacturer Adria are sold at prices up to PLN 400. It can be expensive! The lower the buyer's requirements, the more the price drops. If the trailer remains just a house, you can purchase up to $10 worth of the car. If you want to ride, prepare at least twice as much.

In addition, cheap used camping trailers can be found at many Polish dealers and sellers of camping vehicles. They receive, among other things: trailers are taken into account when purchasing new ones. This is a beneficial solution for the buyer. A used trailer from an authorized dealer is a guarantee that the vehicle has been inspected, updated, tested and fully functional (unless otherwise stated in the offer, but then this is compensated by a lower price).

You can also use social media and sales portals when searching for a trailer. Popular places for buying used trailers among Poles are Western markets, mainly Germany, but also Belgium, France and the Scandinavian countries. In the above countries, due to the great popularity of auto tourism, the supply of the secondary market is extremely wide. Some clients decide to use the services of companies that are intermediaries in these types of transactions, but you can also look for a trailer yourself in Western markets using foreign sales portals. 

How to register a used trailer? 

If the purchased trailer comes from Poland, the registration procedure is very simple and similar to the registration procedure for a passenger car. We require documents (passport certificate, valid liability insurance, purchase agreement or invoice). We pay the two percent PCC tax, fill out the vehicle registration application and that's it! The rest will be taken care of by the Communications Department. 

Registering a trailer from overseas is more difficult and requires more work. This is similar to registering a car imported from another country. We need to do the first check (the so-called zero) and translate the documents into Polish. In this case, we are exempt from the PCC tax, but we bear the cost of registering the vehicle.

In theory: the legal rules are the same throughout Poland, but from the experience of our readers we know that sometimes surprises happen. It may be that different communications departments approach this topic differently depending on the city or county government. To make the task easier and avoid worries, before purchasing (especially in the case of a trailer imported from abroad), you should find out exactly what documents we will need. 

Used caravan - inspection

Different caravan models have their own specific problems, some of which are common throughout the caravan industry. Before purchasing a used trailer, first check the tightness of the structure. Moisture should not penetrate inside. This is extremely important because the repairs may cost more than the trailer itself. Replacing window seals is relatively inexpensive, but repairing the trim and sealing the entire structure is expensive, which means that a seemingly attractive purchase will simply cease to be profitable. Before you buy, you need to... take a deep breath in the trailer. Do you smell a musty smell? In this case, the red warning lamp should light up. If the trailer gets hot, you should also check the gas or electrical system for leaks. This is a very important issue that is decisive for the safety of vehicle users. Also pay attention to the hardness of the floor. Walk through the trailer in silence. How are you? If the floor “works”, then its technical condition is not the best. The more strange sounds reach your ears, the worse it affects the quality of the floor. Inspect the exterior carefully for signs of potential corrosion. They may appear on the drawbar or frame.

Are you interested in the interior layout and equipment? The offer of motorhomes is indeed very wide and it is worth browsing through many models before purchasing. It's quite possible that the next vehicle we look at will be more to our liking, since it will have a bathroom in a much more convenient location for us, and the second berth will be much further (or closer) than the first. When it comes to equipment, remember the main rule: trailers can accommodate almost everything you have at home, such as a kitchen corner, sinks, a microwave, a large table. Knowing the different trailer models will allow you to objectively assess the value of the vehicle you are looking at. However, it must be remembered that elements of equipment, although important in everyday life, are relatively inexpensive “bells and whistles”. We can easily buy them later. When examining, it is worth focusing on the technical aspect.
