The Atto 3 small SUV is BYD Australia's first large-scale all-electric model.

BYD made a splash last week when it announced Australian pricing and specifications for the Atto 3 small SUV, its first all-electric model sold locally. But now we know even more about the zero-emissions upstart, due in July.

Thanks to the Australian Electric Vehicles (EV) Database Ze Car, more details about the Atto 3 have been released, so buckle up as we dive into the MG ZS EV's biggest competitor.

First things first, however, there is a single class available, dubbed Superior. It has two battery options: an unnamed entry-level variant and an extended-range flagship variant. We will explain the differences between them in one of the last sections of this article.

To keep things simple, the Superior starts at $44,381.35 plus travel expenses, while the Superior Extended Ranger claims a premium of $3000, which is $47,381.35 (+ORC).

But if you live in Tasmania, you're in luck because Superior's regular departure rate is $44,990 and the Superior Extended Range is $47,990 (per day per year).

Western Australians are charged significantly more at $47,931.54 (per day) for Superior and $51,313.56 (per day) for Superior Extended Range.

However, the Superior's starting price in Tasmania equals that of the outgoing pre-facelift ZS EV for the title of cheapest all-electric car in Australia, although the latter is priced as such on a national basis.

And don't forget that EV incentives are available in some states and territories and they can reduce your wallet value to some extent, potentially saving you thousands of dollars.

All-electric powertrain and performance

Whether you choose the 1615kg Superior or the 1690kg Superior Extended Range, the Atto 3 is powered by a 150kW/310Nm front electric motor.

Either way, that's enough power to sprint from standstill to 100 mph in 7.3 seconds, which is hot hatch territory (think of the Kia Cerato GT and Hyundai i30 N Line).

In comparison, the Atto 3 is currently numbered ZS EV when it comes to power output (105kW/353Nm), but the latter's updated model will up the ante mid-year with a new, supposedly pricier standard range (130kW/280Nm). ) and extended range. (150 kW/280 Nm) options.

Batteries, mileage and charging time

The Superior comes with a 50.1kWh LFP battery that delivers 320km of WLTP certified range, while as the name suggests, the Superior Extended Range ups the ante with a 60.4kWh unit that lasts for 420km on a single charge.

Thus, the Atto 3 again has an advantage over the pre-facelift ZS EV: the latter's 44.5 kWh battery provides 263 km of driving range.

But soon there will be updated versions of the ZE EV Standard Range and Long Range with batteries with a capacity of 50.3 kWh and 70 kWh for 320 km and 440 km of travel on a single charge, respectively.

Coming back to Atto 3, both the Superior and Superior Extended Range support 7kW AC charging with a Type 2 plug and 80kW DC fast charging with a CCS Type 2 port, while increasing battery capacity from 45 to 20 batteries requires 80 minutes. cent.

Atto 3 also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) or bi-directional charging, with up to 2.2kW of power capable of powering anything from a coffee machine to a microwave oven or any other home appliance.

The Atto 3 comes with a seven-year, unlimited mileage warranty, while its battery is covered by a separate seven-year or 160,000 km warranty.
