From the history of creation
In 1974, designer Giorgetto Giugiaro proposed the sporty contours of a new Volkswagen Scirocco car to replace the obsolete VW Karmann Ghia.
The aim of the developers was to further strengthen the reputation of Volkswagen as a reliable and versatile brand offering a full range of automotive products.
Since then, the Scirocco's appearance and technical equipment have changed significantly, but it still remains a stylish sports car that has won the love and respect of a huge number of motorists around the world during this time.
An almost perfect urban sports car. Gives great impressions every day. The 1.4 engine is a good compromise between dynamics and fuel consumption. How technology has changed over the years
From the moment it appeared on the market to the present day, the technical equipment of Scirocco models of different generations has steadily progressed, allowing the car to remain relevant and in demand.
1974 – 1981 Feet
Unlike the Jetta and Golf, on which the first Scirocco was created, the contours of the new car turned out to be smoother and sportier.. European motorists were able to appreciate all the advantages of a sports car from VW in 1974, North American - in 1975. On the first generation models, an engine with a capacity of 50 to 109 hp could be installed. With. volume from 1,1 to 1,6 liters (in the USA - up to 1,7 liters). If the basic version of 1,1MT accelerated to a speed of 100 km / h in 15,5 seconds, then the 1,6 GTi model took 8,8 seconds. The Sirocco modification, intended for the North American market, was equipped with a five-speed gearbox since 1979, in contrast to European models, which provided only four-position boxes. In the course of work on the appearance of the car and its functionality, the following were undertaken:
- replacement of two wipers with one large size;
- changes in the design of the turn signal, which became visible not only from the front, but also from the side;
- chrome bumpers;
- changing the style of exterior mirrors.
Many special editions had their own color shades. A manually opened hatch appeared on the ceiling.
1981 – 1992 Feet
Among the changes that appeared in the design of the second generation VW Scirocco, the spoiler, which the authors placed under the rear window, attracts attention. This element was intended to optimize the aerodynamic performance of the car, but already in the 1984 model it is absent, instead the braking system was modified: the brake cylinder valves, as well as the brake light, were now controlled by the brake pedal. The volume of the fuel tank has increased to 55 liters. Armchairs in the cabin became leather, standard options were now power windows, air conditioning and a sunroof, in addition, they decided to return to the option with two wipers. The engine power of each subsequent model increased from 74 hp. With. (with a volume of 1,3 liters) up to 137 "horses", which developed a 1,8-liter 16-valve engine.
For reasons of maintaining prestige in 1992, it was decided to suspend the production of VW Scirocco and replace this model with a new one - Corrado.
Fall in love with this car at first sight. This is a head-turn car in the truest sense of the word. As soon as I saw it in the showroom, I immediately decided that it would be mine. And after 2 months I left the salon on the new Sirocco. The disadvantages of the car appear only in winter: it warms up for a long time (it was necessary to install additional heating). The fuel pump pipes must be laid with a seal, as they will rattle in the cold. Either do not use the handbrake in winter, or be prepared to replace it, as it freezes. Pros of the car: appearance, handling, 2.0 engine (210 hp and 300 nm), comfortable interior. In my case, when folding the rear row of seats, it was possible to place 2 snowboards or one mountain bike with the wheel removed. Maintenance is quite simple and the price does not bite.
2008 – 2017 Feet
VW Scirocco found a new breath in 2008, when the third generation concept car was presented at the Paris Motor Show. The appearance of the car has become more dynamic and even aggressive with a sloping roof, streamlined sides and a “fashionable” front end, on which a massive bumper with a false radiator grille occupies a central place. Subsequently, bi-xenon headlights, LED running and taillights were added to the basic configuration. The dimensions have increased compared to its predecessors, the ground clearance was 113 mm. Various configurations can have a curb weight from 1240 to 1320 kg.
Body Scirocco III - three-door with four seats, the front seats are heated. The cabin is not very spacious, but the degree of ergonomics meets expectations: the updated panel received additional boost sensors, oil temperature and a chronometer.
Three versions of the Sirocco were initially available to Russian motorists:
- with a 1,4-liter engine with a capacity of 122 liters. with., which develops at 5 rpm. Torque - 000/200 Nm / rpm. Transmission - 4000-speed manual transmission or 6-position "robot", providing two clutches and the ability to work in manual mode. Such a Scirocco gains 7 km / h in 100 seconds, has a top speed of 9,7 km / h, consumes 200–6,3 liters per 6,4 km;
- with a 1,4-liter engine capable of developing 160 hp. With. at 5 rpm. Torque - 800/240 Nm / rpm. A car equipped with a 4500MKPP or a robotic 6-band DSG accelerates to a speed of 7 km / h in 100 seconds and has a speed limit of 8 km / h. Consumption for versions with "mechanics" - 220, with "robot" - 6,6 liters per 6,3 km;
- with a 2,0-liter engine, which at 5,3–6,0 thousand revolutions per minute can gain power of 210 “horses”. The torque of such a motor is 280/5000 Nm / rpm, the gearbox is a 7-speed DSG. Acceleration to 100 km / h - in 6,9 seconds, top speed - 240 km / h, consumption - 7,5 liters per 100 km.
The next amendments to the design and technical characteristics of the car were made in 2014: the 1,4-liter engine added some power - 125 hp. with., and 2,0-liter units, depending on the degree of forcing, can have a capacity of 180, 220 or 280 “horses”. For the European market, models with diesel engines with a capacity of 150 and 185 hp are assembled. With.

It is known that Volkswagen is quite cautious about changes in the design of new versions of well-known models, and revolutionary restyling is extremely rare. For the latest version of the Scirocco, stylists offered reshaped headlights over a redesigned front bumper and new LED lights over a revised rear bumper. The quality of the materials used in the upholstery of the cabin, as always, meets the highest standards, the dashboard is three-position, traditionally a little cramped inside. Visibility can raise certain questions, in particular, the rear view: the fact is that the rear window is rather narrow, plus massive rear headrests and thick C-pillars somewhat impair the driver's view.
The trunk volume of 312 liters, if necessary, can be increased to 1006 liters by folding the rear seats. The instrument panel is equipped with a 6,5-inch composite multimedia system with Bluetooth phone, audio link, CD player, DAB digital radio, USB connector and SD card slot. The steering wheel is multifunctional with leather upholstery. The GT model also includes the santav system as standard, which can display speed limits and provides a choice of 2D or 3D maps. Park-Assist and cruise control are additional options that the driver can order if necessary.
Pros and cons of petrol and diesel models
VW Scirocco can be equipped with both gasoline and diesel engines, each of which has its pros and cons. Diesel engines in the post-Soviet space are not yet as popular as in Europe and North America, where about 25% of vehicles are equipped with diesel engines. There are many reasons for this, but one of the most significant is the price: the cost of cars with a diesel engine is usually higher. Diesel benefits include:
- low fuel consumption;
- environmental friendliness (CO2 emissions into the surrounding atmosphere are lower than in gasoline engines);
- durability;
- simplicity of design;
- no ignition system.
However, a diesel engine:
- involves costly repairs;
- requires more frequent maintenance;
- may fail if low-quality fuel is poured;
- noisier than petrol.

The key difference between a diesel engine and a gasoline engine is the way the fuel mixture is ignited: if in a gasoline engine this happens with the help of an electric spark created between the spark plug electrodes, then in a diesel engine diesel fuel is ignited by contact with heated compressed air. At the same time, glow plugs are used for quick compression, and for accelerated rotation of the crankshaft (and, accordingly, acceleration of the compression frequency), powerful starters and batteries are used. A gasoline engine is superior to a diesel engine in that:
- cheaper to repair and maintenance;
- provides for a longer interval between scheduled maintenance;
- easier to start in winter;
- works quieter.
Among the disadvantages of a gasoline engine, as a rule, are mentioned:
- the presence of an ignition system, i.e. an additional node that requires attention;
- higher fuel consumption;
- lower unit resource;
- lower torque and power at equal volumes with a diesel engine.

It is quite possible to radically transform the appearance of the Sirocco with the help of tuning kits, such as Aspec. Equipped with accessories from Aspec, the Scirocco gets an all-new front end with massive air intakes and a sculpted hood with two U-shaped slots to expel hot air. The front fenders and exterior mirrors are widened by 50 mm compared to the factory ones. Thanks to the new side sills, the wheel arches are 70 mm wider than the standard ones. Volkswagen Scirocco is a rather specific model, aimed primarily at fans of a sporty driving style.
