Jeep marketing director says Toyota not suited for rough terrain

Jeep is betting on the launch of the Grand Cherokee 4Xe and claims that while Toyota is good, it is not a competitor when it comes to SUVs. Jeep's head of global marketing was surprised by the announcement, but says Toyota may have advantages in other areas than rock climbing.

It brings plug-in hybrid technology to the company's luxury SUV. The hybrid powertrain also offers a new level of efficiency and more power than the alternative V8 engine. However, Jeep has been keen to make it clear that the model hasn't given up on its off-road capability, and chief executive Jeff Ellsworth has made some bold statements about it.

Jeep does not consider Toyota a rival

Toyota is one of the biggest players in the Australian market when it comes to SUVs, and the LandCruiser is actually a cultural icon for the geriatric caravan. However, when asked if Jeep has the best off-road package on the market, Ellsworth didn't hesitate. "I'm biased, but sure," he said. 

Ellsworth is the head of global product marketing for Jeep and has never neglected the capabilities of the brand. “There are different types of off-road and I respect Toyota so I have nothing against them, but when it comes to rock climbing, Toyota can’t do what we can,” Ellsworth continued, adding, “There could be advantages to being Toyota can do elsewhere, but for rock climbing it will be a Jeep in every way.”

This is a bold statement from a leader. Automakers rarely make direct comparisons with their competitors or their products. Traditionally, executives and marketing materials have simply advertised their own horns rather than trying to beat the competition.

In this case, though, Ellsworth was keen to make it clear that Jeep is targeting everything from the Toyota LandCruiser Prado to the Volvo XC60 when it comes to launching the new Grand Cherokee. “The stance has always been like a more upscale car,” Ellsworth said, noting the model’s position in the market, adding that “it’s a unique car in that it’s able to attack the mainstream while aiming to be able to attack well. This is not the first time that Jeep has attacked another brand.

Jeep also has some form in this area as a company. Last year, the president of Jeep North America, which he felt was not as effective as Jeep's own product. 

In any case, the victory will be won not in a war of words, but in the market. With the new Toyota LandCruiser selling out in months and the new Grand Cherokee already receiving a lot of praise, it's time for Jeep to make some headway in Australia.
