Hyundai R diesel engines

The Hyundai R series of diesel engines has been produced since 2009 and during this time has acquired a huge number of different models and modifications.

Diesel engines of the Hyundai R series have been produced at the plant in Korean Ulsan since 2009 and are installed on many large crossovers, minivans and sedans of the Korean concern. Recently, the first generation of these units began to replace the motors of the Smartstream line.

First generation Hyundai R diesel engines

At the very end of 2008, a presentation of a new series of diesel power units developed at the Hyundai-Kia European Research and Development Center in Rüsselheim took place. These are engines with a cast-iron block, an aluminum 16-valve head with hydraulic compensators, a modern Bosch CP4 common rail fuel system with 1800 bar piezo injectors, a variable geometry turbocharger and an intercooler, as well as a timing chain drive.

In addition to the base 2.0-liter D4HA engine, there were two more 2.2-liter units: D4HB for front / all-wheel drive models and D4HC for rear / all-wheel drive cars. Plus, each of these engines was offered in two versions: High Power or Low Power.

In total, the first line included three diesel engines, but in five different modifications:

2.0 CRDi (1995 cm³ 84 × 90 mm)

D4HA LP ( 136 hp / 320 Nm ) Kia Sportage 3 (SL)

Hyundai ix35 1 (LM)
D4HA HP (184 hp / 392 Nm) Kia Sportage 3 (SL)

Hyundai ix35 1 (LM)

2.2 CRDi (2199 cm³ 85.4 × 96 mm)

D4HB LP (150 hp / 412 Nm) Kia Sorento 3 (ONE)

Hyundai Santa Fe 3 (DM)
D4HB HP (197 HP / 436 Nm) Kia Sorento 3 (ONE)

Hyundai Santa Fe 3 (DM)
D4HC HP (202 hp / 441 Nm) Kia Stinger 1 (CK)

Genesis G70 1 (IK)

Hyundai R Series Smartstream Diesel Engines

In 2020, a new generation of R-series diesels with an aluminum cylinder block was introduced. They also received a completely different fuel system with electromagnetic injectors and a maximum injection pressure of 2200 bar, and instead of a pair of timing chains, a belt appeared here.

The second line includes two diesel power units with a working volume of 2.2 liters at once:

2.2 CRDi (2151 cm³ 83 × 99.4 mm)

D4HE (202 hp / 441 Nm) Kia Sorento 4 (MQ4)

Hyundai Santa Fe 4 (TM)
D4HF ( 210 hp / 441 Nm ) Genesis GV70 (JK1), G80 (RG3)
