Road to Zielona Góra: speed contributes to tragedy

Road to Zielona Góra: speed contributes to tragedy “We are starting additional, enhanced speed checks on the busiest roads, especially in the morning and afternoon, when returning from work,” says the chief inspector. Jarosław Chorowski, head of traffic in Zielona Góra.

Road to Zielona Góra: speed contributes to tragedy

- Accidents, collisions, accidents - this is everyday life on the roads. Any idea how to make it better, safer?

“Unfortunately, speed makes drivers forget about caution. I have always said that speed is one of the causes of accidents or collisions. We love to drive fast, but, unfortunately, we do not foresee the consequences. That is why we are starting additional, enhanced speed checks on the busiest roads, especially in the morning and afternoon when returning from work.

- Why at this particular time?

- Statistics show that it is at this time that collisions, accidents or deductions most often occur. We want drivers to drive slower and therefore have this speed control. And I assure you that there will be no concessions to the road pirates.

- I often hear drivers say that he was only driving 70 or 80 km per hour, he was driving safely, but he received a fine.

- This is a very wrong statement. I will give you a specific example. A person was hit by a car moving at a speed of about 50 km/h. has a 30 percent chance of fatal injury. However, when a pedestrian is hit by someone moving at 70 or 80 km per hour, the percentage of certainty that he will die is 70-80%. So, look at how illusory and dangerous the consequences of talking about safety can be for drivers who drive too fast.

What about speed tolerance?

- In the case of speed measurement by a police officer using a laser radar or any other radar, including using a DVR, there is no such thing as an allowable speed. It doesn't exist. This means that a police officer can punish a driver with a fine and demerit points for exceeding the speed limit by one, three or 50 kilometers, and he has every right to do so.

“So the punishment is above all?”

- I can assure you that the police are not engaged in punishment or, as drivers believe, feeding from the state budget. This is absolutely not true. We want and strive for this so that the roads are safe, and people can safely return to their homes and families. Enough road drama. Dramas of victims, victims of accidents and their families. Speed promotes unhappiness.

– What about changes in the regulations? They have been talking about an amendment to the part about mandates for a long time ...

- The severity of the punishment, of course, affects the driver. A serious fine makes a lot of sense. In the planned changes, the police will be able to deprive the driver of a driver's license for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km. Moreover, such a driver will have to retake the exam. And it will certainly be a big nuisance. And, unfortunately, today exceeding the speed limit by just over 50 km is not surprising.

- What, in your opinion, still needs to be changed in the rules about road pirates?

- In many countries there are restrictions on the number of seats. Higher fines are paid to drivers for driving too fast in populated areas. And it makes sense. We have pedestrian crossings in the city, there is a lot of traffic on the roads, cyclists and mopeds. Crazy driving in the city increases the risk of an accident. Today, the regulation clearly fixes the maximum speed limit of 50 km per hour. and more. No higher speed is indicated, such as 70 or 90 km. A driver who exceeds the speed limit by, for example, 90 km/h will receive the same penalty as one who exceeds the speed limit by 50 km/h.
