A worthy successor to the Corolla - Toyota Auris (2007-)

Five years ago, Toyota made a revolution. She sent the 3- and 5-door Corollas obsolete. The more stylistically daring Auris took its place. Time has shown that the car is just as durable and in demand in the secondary market as its predecessor.

Corolla is a legend that appeared in 1966. Each of the nine generations of the model was practical and durable. Because of its conservative styling, the Corolla was considered a car for conservatives. Keeping in mind lovers of classic forms, the concern has prepared the tenth generation of Corolla - a compact sedan. Technically, the two-seat hatchback has been offered in most markets as the Auris since 2007. Quickly, because already in 2010, Auris underwent a facelift. A modified front apron and new rear light lenses have a positive effect on the appearance of the car.

Compared with the ninth generation Corolla, the lines of the presented car are a significant step forward, but Auris are far from the most expressive compacts. The same applies to the interior, which has become more interesting, but still does not stand out above average. Unfortunately, this also applies to the quality of finishing materials and colors. Toyota differs from the level represented by German and French C-segment cars.

The salon pleasantly surprises with spaciousness. The front seats of the Auris are set quite high, which, together with the far windshield, can give the impression of traveling in a minivan. There is also a place for adult passengers in the second row, where comfort is further enhanced by a floor without a central tunnel. The luggage compartment is also decent, with a capacity of 354 liters, and with the rear seats folded down - 1335 liters. The biggest drawback of the cabin is an oversized and inefficient center console.

An unusual but convenient solution is a high-mounted gearbox jack. Some doubts may arise in vehicles equipped with a MultiMode automatic transmission, the slow operation of which limits driving pleasure. The level of equipment is quite satisfactory - as standard, Toyota offers ABS, four airbags, manual air conditioning, an audio system and an on-board computer.

The list of engine versions is quite large. It includes petrol engines 1.33 (101 hp), 1.4 (97 hp), 1.6 (124 and 132 hp) and 1.8 (147 hp) and 1.4 diesels (90 hp). s.), 2.0 (126 hp) and 2.2 (177 hp). . The performance of the weakest engines is only enough for the calmest drivers. Petrol 1.4 allows you to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 13 seconds, and diesel 1.4 - 11,9 seconds.

When looking for a used copy, it is worth remembering that the 1.33 Dual VVT-i engine in combination with a six-speed gearbox is more agile than the older 1.4 VVT-i, which was equipped with a five-speed gearbox. The smallest gasoline engine burns out in the combined cycle 6,7 l / 100km. 1.6 engines need about 1 l/100 km more. a lot because 7,6 l / 100km burns the most powerful diesel 2.2 D-CAT. This is offset by the great flexibility provided by 400 Nm at 2000 rpm. The 1.4 D-4D engine has an average of 5,6 l / 100 km. In 2010, the offer was replenished with a hybrid version of HSD, which will be extremely difficult to find on the secondary market.

The Auris's suspension is comfort-oriented, making for decent ride quality, but it can fall short when cornering dynamically. The limited stiffness of the suspension leads to pronounced and unpleasant body roll, and the situation is not improved by the limited steering precision.

The suspension consists of front MacPherson struts and a torsion beam at the rear (the only exception is Auris 2.2 D-CAT with a multi-link rear axle). The solution is not only relatively cheap to repair, but also durable. For the first 100-150 thousand kilometers in the suspension of a small car manufactured in British Derbyshire, replacement of parts is usually not required.

Drivers don't complain about other components either, though Toyota has experienced a few quality setbacks. As in the three-door Corolla, it is not very durable. front seat folding mechanism. Driver's seat upholstery may show signs of use. Body paint and the plastic inside is prone to scratches. The first pockets of corrosionsteering, coolant leaks and problems with gearbox bearings. Some users were annoyed by the squeaky gear selectors and clutch pedals. Most of the shortcomings were eliminated by warranty services.

In the total number of cars produced, the above disadvantages are still quite rare. The second place in the TUV rating is the best confirmation of the very high durability of the car. The Auris is also at the forefront of the ADAC rankings, ahead of the Golf, Mazda 3, Ford Focus and Honda Civic. According to ADAC, the most common problems were over-discharged batteries, immobilizers, power steering systems, particulate filters, turbochargers, and rear brakes. Most breakdowns were found in cars of the first year of production. It is also worth emphasizing that the specialists of the German Automobile Club found a significant reduction in malfunctions compared to the ninth generation Corolla.

Those who are looking for a used copy will have to prepare significant sums. For less than PLN 30, you can buy a white or silver Auris with a diesel engine and a mileage of 130 kilometers. Of course, the company's cars had a difficult life. A used Auris from private hands will have to add at least a few thousand zlotys.

AutoX-ray - what owners of Toyota Auris complain about

The Toyota Auris was meant to be visually more appealing than the Corolla. We have taken a big step forward, but buying a much more attractive C-segment car is not a problem. However, there are many people interested in Auris. What is the secret of compact Toyota? The lack of extravagance means that the aging process will be slow. After nearly five years on the market, it is already known that durability is also Auris' strong point.

Recommended engines

Gasoline 1.6: A good compromise between performance and fuel consumption. The lack of direct injection and turbocharging should mean reasonable maintenance costs even in the long run. If funds allow, it is worth looking for the 2009 Valvematic engine, offered since 1.6, with continuously variable valve lift, consuming an average 7,1 l / 100km. The alternative is older and slightly more fuel-intensive (7,7 l / 100km) 1.6 Dual VVT-i with variable valve timing. The 1,8 liter petrol engine is rare and provides somewhat better performance than the 1.6 liter engine.

1.4 D-4D diesel: The smallest of the turbodiesels proves to be the most comfortable for the driver. Not only at gas stations due to average fuel consumption 5,6 l / 100km comes to visit very rarely. With runs of more than 100 1.4 kilometers, the absence of a dual-mass flywheel and a particulate filter - elements that cost thousands of zł, will also have a positive effect on operating costs. Timing belt has a chain drive. The only inconvenience associated with the operation of Auris 4 D-D is the need for relatively frequent topping up of oil, which sometimes burns out in large quantities.
