The 1.2 PureTech engine is one of the best units ever made by PSA

The three-cylinder engine was undoubtedly a success. Since 2014, more than 850 1.2 jobs have been created. copies, and the 100 PureTech engine is installed in more than XNUMX PSA car models. We present the most important information about the unit from the French group.

The unit replaced the 1.6-liter four-cylinder version of the Prince series.

PureTech engines are gradually replacing the older 1.6-liter four-cylinder versions of the Prince series, which were developed in collaboration with BMW. Unfortunately, their operation was associated with many failures. The new PSA project proved successful. It is worth looking at the technical changes made by the designers of the newer 1.2 PureTech engine.

Differences from previous engines

First, the coefficient of friction has been optimized, which increased fuel economy by as much as 4%. One of the decisions that contributed to this was the installation of a newer turbocharger, which began to generate a speed of 240 rpm. with much less weight.

Newer powertrains are also equipped with a GPF, a gasoline particulate filter that has cut particulate emissions by more than half, which is good news for those looking to own a car that meets the latest emissions regulations.

1.2 PSA PureTech engine - technical data

The unit is equipped with a diesel particulate filter, thanks to which the engine complies with the emission standards Euro 6d-Temp and Chinese 6b. PureTech engines also have a conventional coolant pump driven by its own V-belt.. The designers of the 1.2 PureTech engine have also opted for an oil-running timing belt that needs to be replaced every 10 years or 240 km. km. to avoid serious error.

In what cars can these motors be found?

The 1.2 PureTech engine proves that the often criticized downsizing procedure can be a good solution. This is confirmed by numerous awards, as well as the fact that individual car models with this unit are very popular with buyers. Modular and compact units - in the 110 and 130 hp versions. mainly used in Peugeot cars from B, C and D-segments.

Effective design solutions

The 1.2 PureTech engine is not accidentally called an economical unit. This is achieved by using a 200 bar high pressure direct injection system located in the center.

What does the position of the injector mean to be able to control injection pulses with laser technology and the aforementioned pressure? Thus, the engine optimizes the process of injecting gasoline into the combustion chamber, thereby receiving the minimum possible amount of fuel.

Reduced fuel consumption - optimization

Other design aspects of the unit also contribute to lower fuel consumption. The aerodynamics of the combustion chamber has been optimized, and variable valve timing has been adopted for the intake and exhaust valves. As a result, the 1.2 PureTech petrol engine is not only economical, but also environmentally friendly.

Engine operation 1.2 PureTech

The 1.2 PureTech engine performs very well not only in compact car models but also in larger vehicles. We are talking about large SUVs - Peugeot 3008, 5008, Citroen C4 or Opel Grandland.

Problems with this unit from PSA

One of the most common problems with the 1.2 PureTech is the low wear resistance of the accessory drive belt. It should be replaced prophylactically - preferably every 30-40 thousand. kilometers. The same should be done with spark plugs - here it is best to replace them every 40-50 thousand. km. The fact that the elements are faulty can be recognized by a clear decrease in power, as well as an increase in fuel consumption and the appearance of other (unfortunately, numerous) errors during the operation of the control unit.

How long will a 1.2 PureTech engine last?

PSA units are installed on many models of the French group, as well as on some Opel cars - in addition to Grandland, this group includes Astra and Corsa. 1.2 PureTech engines are very well rated not only by experts, but also by ordinary users - the units practically do not cause problems on average at 120/150 thousand km. km.

In the case of this engine, attention should first of all be paid to the absence of serious shortcomings in technical solutions - the design of the unit is sound and economical. If we join low operating costs, a satisfactory work culture and the availability of spare parts, we can say that the 1.2 PureTech engine will be a good choice.

only problem is that after 5 years all those unfortunate puretech owners add 1 liter of oil every 1000 km... really nice engine... go read the reviews of those who bought this rubbish Peugeot

The engine is a total disaster. I have already changed a dozen of those belts under 60 km. The belt loosens and clogs the oil pump screen. Same thing as Ford's 000 and 1.0 ecoboost.
