1.6 HDi engine - the most important information about the diesel PSA and Ford

The block is present in various car models. The 1.6 HDi engine has been installed in cars such as the Ford Focus, Mondeo, S-Max and Peugeot 207, 307, 308 and 407. It can also be used by Citroen C3, C4 and C5 drivers, as well as Mazda. 3 and Volvo S40/V50.

1.6 HDi engine - what is worth knowing about it?

The unit is one of the most popular motorcycles of the first decade of the 21st century. Diesel was used in cars of well-known manufacturers. It was created by PSA - Peugeot Société Anonyme, but the unit was also installed on Ford, Mazda, Suzuki, Volvo and MINI cars owned by BMW. The 1.6 HDi engine was developed by PSA in collaboration with Ford.

Ford collaborates with PSA on HDi/TDCi development

The 1.6 HDi engine was developed in collaboration between Ford and PSA. The concerns merged as a result of the great success of competing divisions - Fiat JTD and Volkswagen TDI. An American-French group decided to create their own Common Rail turbodiesel. Thus, a block from the HDi / TDCi family was created. It was produced in England, France and India. The engine debuted in 2004 when it was installed on the Peugeot 407. It can also be found on many Mazda, Volvo, MINI and Suzuki vehicles.

The most popular 1.6 HDi unit models

This group includes 1.6 HDi engines with 90 and 110 hp. The former can be equipped with a fixed or variable geometry turbine, with or without a floating flywheel. The second option, on the other hand, is only available with a variable geometry turbine and a floating flywheel. Both versions are available as an option with FAP filter.

The 1.6 HDi engine introduced in 2010 is also very popular. It was an 8-valve unit (the number of valves was reduced from 16), complying with the Euro 5 environmental standard. Three types were available:

  • DV6D-9HP with a power of 90 hp;
  • DV6S-9KhL with a power of 92 hp;
  • 9HR with 112 hp

How is the drive arranged?

The first aspect worth noting is that the turbodiesel cylinder block is made of aluminum with an inner sleeve. The timing system also has a belt and chain with a separate hydraulic tensioner connecting both camshafts.

The crankshaft is connected to the belt only by a separate exhaust camshaft pulley. It should be noted that the design of the unit does not provide for balancing shafts. The 1,6 HDi engine works in such a way that the camshaft gears are pressed onto them. When the chain breaks, there is no hard impact of the pistons on the valves, because the wheels slip on the rollers.

Engine power 1.6HDi

The 1.6 HDi engine is available in two basic versions with 90 hp. and 110 hp The first is equipped with a conventional TD025 turbine from MHI (Mitsubishi) with a main valve, and the second is equipped with a Garrett GT15V turbine with variable geometry. Common elements of both motors are the intercooler, intake and exhaust systems, as well as controls. A common rail fuel system with a CP1H3 high pressure fuel pump and solenoid injectors was also used.

The most common faults

One of the most common is a problem with the injection system. This is manifested by problems with starting the unit, its uneven operation, loss of power or black smoke that comes from the exhaust pipe during acceleration. It is worth paying attention to the quality of the refueling fuel, because those from the lower price range can adversely affect the life of the system.

Floating flywheel problems are also common. You can tell this component has been damaged if you feel a lot of vibration while driving and you can hear noise around the accessory drive belt or transmission. The cause may also be a malfunction of the crankshaft pulley throttle. If the floating wheel needs to be replaced, it will also be necessary to replace the old clutch kit with a new one.

The working element of the 1.6 HDi engine is also a turbine. It can fail due to both wear and tear, as well as oil problems: carbon deposits or soot particles that can clog the filter screen.

The 1.6 HDi engine has received good reviews, mainly due to its low failure rate, durability and optimal power, which is especially noticeable in small cars. 110 hp unit provides a better driving experience, but may be more expensive to maintain than the 90 hp variant, which lacks the variable geometry turbine and floating flywheel. In order for the drive to work stably, it is worth monitoring the regular oil change and maintenance of the 1.6 HDi engine.
