The Renault 1.9 dCi engine was released in 1999 and immediately attracted attention. Common rail injection and 120 hp provided low fuel consumption and very decent performance. On paper, everything looked good, but the operation showed something completely different. 1.9 dCi engine - what you need to know about it?

Renault and the 1.9 dCi engine - technical features

Let's start with theory. The French manufacturer released a 120 hp motor, thus providing a response to the needs of the market. In fact, the 1.9 dCi engine was available in several versions ranging from 100 to 130 hp. However, it was the 120-horsepower design that was deeply remembered by drivers and mechanics because of its low durability. This unit uses a common rail injection system developed by Bosch, a Garrett turbocharger and, in newer versions for 2005, a diesel particulate filter.

Renault 1.9 dCi - why such a bad reputation?

We owe the confusion to the 1.9 dCi engine with 120 hp. Other variants still enjoy good reviews, especially the 110 and 130 hp variants. In the described embodiment, the causes of the problems lie in the turbocharger, injection system and rotating bearings. Engine accessories are, of course, remanufactured or can be replaced at affordable prices. However, the described diesel engine, after turning the bushings, was basically disposed of and replaced with a new rack. For such an operation on older cars, an amount exceeding the value of the car is required, so buying a vehicle with this engine is very risky.

Why does a turbocharger fail quickly?

Drivers of new (!) Copies complained of problems with turbines after 50-60 thousand kilometers. I had to regenerate them or replace them with new ones. Why did this problem arise, because the supplier was the well-known brand Garrett? The car manufacturer recommended changing the oil every 30 km, which, according to many mechanics, is extremely risky. Currently, in these units, the oil is changed every 10-12 thousand kilometers, which ensures trouble-free operation. Under the influence of low-quality lubricant, the parts of the turbocharger quickly wore out and its “death” accelerated.

Another question is the need to repair CR injectors. The faults were caused by the low quality of the fuel being filled, which, combined with the sensitivity of the system and high operating pressure (1350-1600 bar), led to wear of parts. The cost of one copy, however, usually does not exceed 40 euros, however, after replacement, each of them must be calibrated. However, this is nothing compared to the difficulties that arise due to rotating pans.

Why did these elements in the presented engines like to rotate? They used cups without locks to prevent rotation. Under the influence of the extended oil change interval, even cars with low mileage were in operation in anticipation of a new unit. Under the influence of a deterioration in the quality of the oil and an increase in friction, the bearing shells rotated, which led to wear of the crankshaft and connecting rods. Overhaul in the current conditions is to replace the node. If the failure did not lead to serious damage to the surface, the case ended with the polishing of the plaster.

1.9 dCi 120KM - is it worth buying?

The work of Renault and Nissan engineers has a bad reputation. 120 hp version represents a particularly high risk in the secondary market. To be sure of its reliability, you should read the full service history and confirm the actual mileage. Repairs performed, supported by invoices, should also give you some idea of ​​the situation. But how many such offers can be found on the market? Remember that an engine overhaul is a deep pocket from the start. Usually, a used car is brought to the workshop to replace the timing belt - in this case, it can be much worse.

The truth is that not every variant of the 1.9 aggregate is bad. 110 hp motors and 130 hp are extremely durable, so you might want to consider buying them.. Especially users recommend a stronger version released in 2005. If you absolutely need a 1.9 dCi engine, then this is the most powerful of them all.
