Engine 1VZ-FE

Engine 1VZ-FE All motorists are ready to confirm that Japanese-made engines are reliable power units that, with proper operation, have a turnaround time of up to 1 million km. The power plants developed by Toyota are especially famous for this. One of these engines is the toyota 1VZ-FE engine, which was used to complete the CAMRY modification (in adaptation to the American automotive market - VISTA).

History of the engine

Used until 1988 in the model range of the company's cars, the Toyota MZ power unit did not fully meet the requirements for average torque, which created certain problems during the operation of the equipment. At this time, Nissan introduced a new VG engine that met the required operating conditions. To increase sales of cars in the international car market and counteract a competing company, Toyota designers have developed a new 2-liter gasoline engine with two camshafts in the cylinder head (DOHC), which received the abbreviation 1VZ-FE.

In 1991, the company stopped the production of these engines, before which it significantly reduced the volume of production, as a number of significant operational shortcomings were identified. A new power unit was created under the abbreviation Toyota GR, which took into account the shortcomings of its prototype - the ICE 1VZ-FE, which was installed on the following cars:

  • Camry Prominent in VZV20 and VZV3x bodies (1988-1991);
  • Vista (1988-1991).

The main advantage of this power unit was the extreme value of torque at low speeds, which made it possible to use them on such types of vehicles as crossovers, small trucks and minibuses. Like all Toyota engines produced at that time, they had cast-iron blocks. In addition, the unit with a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders is located higher than the engine with an in-line arrangement of the piston group. This allows you to significantly reduce the load force on the crankshaft, which leads to an increase in the efficiency of such power plants. At the same time, such units are very capricious, they have a large amount of fuel, the engine, even in perfect timing condition, “takes” a certain amount of oil. Another weak point is the increased wear of the crankshaft main journals. And the price of spare parts is very high to afford to keep the car in perfect order. Owners of cars with such a power unit often complain about the hydraulic fan drive, which is unreliable and malfunctions, which often leads to engine overheating with subsequent defects. Therefore, repairing 1VZ-FE is a rather expensive pleasure.

Conclusion

Designed by the Japanese designers of Toyota, the motor as a whole did not justify the hopes of its inventors. In the work, it proved to be an unreliable and defect-prone unit, allowing a violation of the thermal regime of operation of the cooling system.
