This is due to different opinions about the failure rate of some units. However, the truth is sometimes different, the best example of which is the durable 2.0 HDI engine, which was also the first to receive the Common Rail system.

It was an eight-valve unit with a capacity of 109 hp, which was placed under the hood of a Peugeot 406. A year later, a weaker version with 90 hp appeared. The engine was a technological development of the 1.9 TD engine, initially the manufacturer used a single-camshaft, a BOSCH injection system and a turbocharger with a fixed blade geometry in the new design. An optional FAP filter can be ordered as an option.

From the very beginning, this motor has undergone a number of modifications and year after year it has been appreciated by more and more buyers. In 2000, engineers developed a sixteen-valve version with 109 hp, installed on MPV-type cars: Fiat Ulysse, Peugeot 806 or Lancia Zeta. A year later, modern Siemens injection systems were introduced, and in 2002 the fuel injection system was redesigned. 140 HP variant debuted in 2008. However, this was not the most powerful version of this engine, as 2009 and 150 hp series appeared in 163. Interestingly, the engine was installed not only on PSA models, but also on Volvo, Ford and Suzuki cars.

With more mileage, parts that are typical for modern turbodiesels wear out. Most often, the fuel pressure valve in the injection system fails - in the injection pump. If there is a problem starting the car, the engine runs rough or smokes, this is a sign that this valve should be checked.

Characteristic knocks from the drive area most often indicate the failure of the pulley torsional vibration damper. This problem occurs regularly on the eight-valve version. If we notice that the engine develops unevenly, the fuel consumption is higher, and the car is weaker than usual, this is a signal that you should take a look at the flow meter. If it is damaged, we only need to replace it with a new one. A drop in power can also be the result of a faulty turbocharger. A damaged one can cause increased oil consumption and excessive smoke.

More smoke or starting problems can also cause the EGR valve to fail. Most often, it is mechanically clogged with soot, sometimes cleaning it helps, but unfortunately, most often the repair ends with a replacement for a new component. Another item on the list of potential faults is the dual mass wheel. When we feel vibrations when starting off, noise around the gearbox and difficult gear changes, it is likely that the dual-mass wheel has just worked. Many mechanics say that it is best to change the dual mass along with the clutch, the repair cost will of course be higher, but thanks to this we will be sure that the malfunction will not return.

The 2.0 HDI engine is quiet, economical and dynamic. When a given vehicle has been regularly serviced, not subjected to excessive use and the mileage is at an acceptable level, you should be interested in such a car. There is no shortage of spare parts, specialists know this engine well, so there should be no problems with repairs.
