The 2.7 TDi engine was most often installed on the Audi A4, A5 and A6 C6 models. The TDi engine family - how is it characterized?

The 2.7 power unit belongs to the TDi family. Therefore, it is worth checking what exactly this group of motors is characterized by. Extension of the abbreviation TDi Turbocharged Direct Injection. This name is used to refer to cars of brands belonging to the Volkswagen concern.

The term is used in engines that use a turbocharger that increases power by supplying more compressed air to the combustion chamber. On the other hand, direct injection means that the fuel is fed through the high pressure injectors also into the combustion chamber.

Advantages and disadvantages of turbocharged and direct injection engines

Thanks to the solutions used, engines with this technology were distinguished by more efficient use of fuel, greater torque and reliability. This was influenced by the low use of spark plugs, the disadvantages include a higher price at the beginning of distribution, as well as the release of a sufficiently large amount of pollutants and expensive operation. 

2.7 TDi engine - technical data

The 2.7 TDi V6 engine was available in 180 and 190 hp versions. The production of the model began in 2004 and ended in 2008. The internal combustion engine was installed on the most popular Audi cars. It was replaced by the 3.0 lo version with 204 hp.

This unit was installed in front of the machine in a longitudinal position.

  1. He gave out 180 hp. at 3300–4250 rpm.
  2. The maximum torque was 380 Nm at 1400–3300 rpm.
  3. The total working volume was 2968 cm³. 
  4. The engine used a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders, their diameter was 83 mm, and the piston stroke was 83,1 mm with a compression ratio of 17.
  5. There were four pistons in each cylinder - the DOHC system.

Power unit operation - oil consumption, fuel consumption and performance

The 2.7 TDi engine had an 8.2 liter oil tank. The manufacturer recommends using a specific viscosity grade:

  • 5W-30;
  • 5W-40;
  • 10W-40;
  • 15W-40.

To ensure optimal operation of the power unit, it was necessary to use oil of specification VW 502 00, VW 505 00, VW 504 00, VW 507 00 and VW 501 01. It also had a coolant tank with a capacity of 12.0 liters. liters. 

2.7 TDi engine and combustion parameters

In terms of fuel consumption and performance, the Audi A6 C6 is an example. The diesel installed on this vehicle has consumed:

  • from 9,8 to 10,2 liters of fuel per 100 km in the city;
  • from 5,6 to 5,8 liters per 100 km on the highway;

Problems when using the device

The most common malfunctions are related to the operation of the circuit. Although the German manufacturer advertised it as extremely reliable, able to withstand the rigors of operation throughout the life of cars with this engine, it usually wore out before reaching 300 km. km.

Replacing the chain and tensioner can be costly. This is due to a rather complex design, which increases the cost of replacing the part on the mechanics. Defective parts also include piezoelectric injectors. Bosch branded components cannot reborn as is the case with some other units. You need to buy a completely new chip.

Key transmission, brake and suspension components for the Audi A6 C6

Front wheel drive was used in the Audi A6 C6. The car is available with Multitronic, 6 Tiptronic and Quattro Tiptronic gearboxes. An independent multi-link suspension is installed at the front, and an independent trapezoidal wishbone suspension at the rear.
