Engine 2JZ-GTE

Engine 2JZ-GTE The 2JZ-GTE engine is one of the most powerful powertrain models in the 2JZ series. It includes two turbos with an intercooler, has two camshafts with a belt drive from the crankshaft and has six direct-position cylinders. The cylinder head is made of aluminum and created by Toyota Motor Corporation, and the engine block itself is cast iron. This motor was made only in Japan from 1991 to 2002.

The 2JZ-GTE competed with Nissan's RB26DETT engine, which was successful in NTouringCar and FIA championships.

Additional equipment applicable to this type of motors

The 2JZ-GTE motor was equipped with two types of gearboxes:

  • 6-speed manual transmission Toyota V160 and V161;
  • 4-speed automatic transmission Toyota A341E.

This motor was originally installed on the Toyota Aristo V model, but then it was installed on the Toyota Supra RZ.

New modification of the motor and major changes

The basis of the 2JZ-GTE is the 2JZ-GE engine, which was developed by Toyota earlier. Unlike the prototype, a turbocharger with a side intercooler was installed on the 2JZ-GTE. Also, in the pistons of the updated engine, more oil grooves were made for better cooling of the pistons themselves, and recesses were also made to reduce the so-called physical compression ratio. Connecting rods, crankshaft and cylinders were installed the same.

On the Aristo Altezza and Mark II cars, other connecting rods were subsequently installed when compared with the Toyota Aristo V and Supra RZ. Also, the engine in 1997 was finalized by the VVT-i system.. This system changed the gas distribution phases and made it possible to significantly increase the torque and power of the 2JZ-GTE modification engine.

With the first improvements, the torque was equal to 435 N * m, however, after the new equipment of the 2JZ-GTE vvti engine in 1997, the torque increased and became equal to 451 N * m. The power of the base 2JZ-GE engine was increased as a result of the installation of a twin turbocharger created by Toyota together with Hitachi. From 227 hp 2JZ-GTE twin turbo power increased to 276 hp at revolutions equal to 5600 per minute. And by 1997, the power of the Toyota 2JZ-GTE power unit had grown to 321 hp. in the European as well as North American markets.

Exported engine modifications

A more powerful version was produced by Toyota for export. The 2JZ-GTE engine gained power from the installation of new stainless steel turbochargers, as opposed to the use of ceramics in engines for the Japanese market. In addition, the injectors and camshafts have been improved, which produce more fuel mixture per minute. To be precise, it is 550 ml/min for export and 440 ml/min for the Japanese market. Also, for export, CT12B turbines were installed in duplicate, and for the domestic market, CT20, also in the amount of two turbines. Turbines CT20, in turn, are divided into categories, which were indicated by additional letters: A, B, R. For two engine options, the interchangeability of the exhaust system was possible due to the mechanical part of the turbines.

Engine specifications

Despite the above detailed description of the engine design of the 2JZ-GTE model, there are several more important aspects that you should pay attention to. For convenience, the characteristics of the 2JZ-GTE are given in the form of a table.

List of cars on which the engine was installed

It is worth noting that this engine model has proven to be a reliable and unpretentious power unit in maintenance. According to the information, this modification of the motor was installed on such car models as:

  • Toyota Supra RZ/Turbo (JZA80);
  • Toyota Aristotle (JZS147);
  • Toyota Aristo V300 (JZS161).

Reviews of car owners, with 2JZ-GTE engines

It is also worth noting that, judging by the reviews, there were no obvious shortcomings in the engine of this modification. With regular and competent maintenance, it proved to be a very reliable engine, which for its parameters has a rather low fuel consumption. The cylinders are forced to use platinum spark plugs, as the candles are quite difficult to obtain. A small minus in American mounted units with a hydraulic tensioner.

However, by and large, it was this particular model of the power unit that for a long time remained in the lead in terms of quality and level of performance.
