Engine 2ZR-FAE

Engine 2ZR-FAE The family of engines of the ZR series line, which replaced the outdated types of ZZ engines, debuted on the domestic market in the fall of 2006, and in the summer of 2007, they began the main serial production of this type of unit. The appearance of 2ZR-FAE is the fourth wave of engines created during the entire existence of the Toyota concern, started back in the 70s. It all started with the old, now forgotten series R, V, M, T, early A and S.

Technical specifications

The 2ZR-FAE engine, however, like all other units of this line, is 4-cylinder in-line engines, with a DOCH gas distribution system, with 16 valves, four for each cylinder.

The whole series of ZR motors is divided into 3 types of units from 1,6; 1,8 and 2,0 liter capacity. On them, for the first time in the history of Toyota, the Valvematic system was installed. The proprietary dual VVT-i gas distribution system and Valvematic were also installed on the 2ZR-FAE engine, which, depending on the quality and operating conditions of the engine, can dynamically change valve lift from 1 to 11 mm, with an increased compression ratio of up to 10,5: 1 .

The 2ZR-FAE engine is ten percent more fuel efficient, with low consumption at cruising speed and directly related to the air temperature at the time of the trip. Its power ranges from 143-150 hp, at a speed of 6600 rpm. and 173–180 H•m, at 4400 rpm. in a minute. The power developed by the car directly depends on the different settings of the control unit (ECU) included in the package, the engine.

Components, elements and characteristics of 2ZR-FAE;

  • Cast engine block;
  • Lightweight, lined aluminum alloy cylinder block;
  • XNUMXmm crankshaft deaxle;
  • Light-alloy T-shaped pistons connected to the connecting rods with floating fingers;
  • One-piece cast crankcase, with the possibility of dismantling without a complete analysis of all structural elements;
  • Vertical arrangement of the engine, which is fixed on 4 supports;
  • All motors with the same cylinder diameters and distinguishable piston strokes;
  • Installed hydraulic lifters;
  • Timing drive - single row chain.

Features of operation and main defects

The question whether this is a good engine or a bad one is initially wrong. Judging by the quality, reliability and durability, then, of course, the old engines are leaders, proven by time and operation. Engines, starting from the third wave of the late 90s (ZZ, AZ, NZ engines), ending with a new generation series (ZR-FE and ZR-FAE), are practically beyond repair, especially its mechanical part.

If you structure the reviews of car owners with an installed engine, you can count a lot of defects.

  • Oil consumption - increased;
  • Combustion chamber - deposition of combustion products;
  • VVT drive - knocking at startup;
  • pump leak;
  • Vacuum pump - excessive noise when the motor is running;
  • Oil leaks from under the chain cover;
  • Forced idle errors;
  • Low fuel pressure - as a result, hot start problems.

It is difficult to calculate the approximate life of the engine with an accuracy of one year. An installed chain, with a sounding advertising slogan - "work for the entire life of the car", does not always justify reality. Dreaming is not harmful, but it obviously will not pass several hundred thousand kilometers.

Although it is worth noting that the life of the chain, compared to the belt, is really a little longer, due to the fact that it rarely breaks and does not require scheduled replacement every six months. It is only true that it, like the belt, must be carefully monitored, if the chain breaks, a meeting with the valves is inevitable, and this is a repair for a tidy sum.

In principle, it does not require special intervention, but the range of the chain is about 150 thousand km. Then it will begin to stretch, the hydraulic tensioner will lose its position, the chain begins to literally “saw through” the tensioners and dampers, wearing out the rollers of the shafts, and the wear products enter the engine oil. The life of the engine itself is noticeably reduced.

Vehicles with 2ZR-FAE engine

The team of vehicles equipped with the 2ZR-FAE engine is Toyota;

  • Auris;
  • Avensis;
  • Corolla Rumion;
  • IS;
  • Wish;
  • Towards;
  • The latest models from 2010 to the present are Allion and Premio.

Instead of an epilogue, we can say that the absence of cardinal breakdowns throughout the engine warranty period, optimal winter start-up and reasonable fuel consumption is already an achievement. And conclusions about whether the engine is bad or good can be quite confidently drawn after several years of operation.
