Engine 3ZR-FAE
The launch of Toyota's new ZR engine series is a huge step forward. The new ZR engine series first appeared at the beginning of 2007 and has maintained its position very well. The engines of this series have received new improved characteristics and completely replaced the older version of the ZZ and AZ engines. This novelty has DOHC 16V, which allows you to increase power and save fuel consumption. This new engine model was only available in 1,6 and 1,8 liters and in some cases 2,0 liters. With the release of the ZR series, and the Toyota 3ZR-FAE engine, the Dual VVT-I valve exhaust system has been improved. This technology has made it possible to optimize both consumption and exhaust valve timing.
Additional improvements
Toyota is the first car company to use the Valvematic system on their cars. 3ZR-FAE Valvematic is a system for smoothly changing the height of the valves. One of the cars that was equipped with this system was the Toyota Avensis released in 2009. In addition, several details have been improved on the new ZR engine series to improve overall driving performance. Improvements succumbed: hydraulic lifters and crankshaft deaxage. Owners of cars of the Corolla family could feel these improvements for themselves, because it was this modification of the motor that was installed on these cars. Later, they began to be installed on models of classes "B", "C" and "D", as well as on minivans and SUVs based on them, for example, on Toyota Isis and RAV4.
Disadvantages and defects
Despite most of the improvements and many improvements, these engines had significant shortcomings that cannot be ignored. During operation, obvious defects can be noticed, some of which are accompanied by a strong knock of the drives and the noise of the vacuum pump. The main disadvantages during operation:
- frequent oil changes;
- large slag residues at the bottom of the combustion chambers;
- pump leaks and frequent oil leakage from under the chain cover;
- Valvematic controller errors;
- sudden engine shutdown due to program failure.
Despite all this, the ZR engine series, including the 3ZR-FAE engine, remains one of the best of its kind. Previous production series had problems with huge oil consumption, but now this problem has become less horrendous than before. Oil consumption has become from 250 to 350 ml. per 1000 km. In order to somehow reduce consumption, it is advised to use oils that have a higher viscosity. The 3ZR-FAE engine, according to official documents, mentions some more possible problems that may arise during operation. These are mainly errors in some electronic programs, such as EVAP errors, problems with hot start and loud noise of the coolant pump, as well as some parts that require frequent replacement.
Positive sides
The 3ZR-FAE is a great addition to the ZR series. The characteristics of the 3ZR-FAE have become much better, which means that the engine of this series has become more economical, but at the same time powerful. It has a volume of 2,0 liters. Power has been noticeably increased and now it is 158 hp. at 6200 rpm. The engine torque has also been improved and now at only 4400 rpm it is 144 kg * m. Gasoline consumption has become noticeably less. Now the consumption per 100 kilometers has become equal to about 10 liters in the city.
